Cubase fades

Situation: we have been recording practice on Cubase with the intention of taking the occasional decent recording and turning it into a demo.

The Goal: cut up what amounts to a stream of consciousness punctuated by actual playing, with the sound fading up and then back out in the final mix.

Software: Right now, Elements 8. whatever it's up to now.

Problem: I cannot figure out how to fade in and fade out once I have cut and saved the section of the recording that is worth working with. Probably operator error - I don't know what I'm doing, and the instruction manual wasn't written for complete idiots like me.

Any suggestions?

each segment, on its own track: automate fade in and fade out on that track. repeat for the other segments, and place those segments one after another (or probably overlapping a little) to create the 'master' version.

Each segment is actually eight tracks. There are three vocal mics, three on drums, one each on bass and guitar. We record everything at the same time - I guess what you are saying is that I should take the song portion, with the banter and false starts removed, and then do whatever eq and processing I think it needs. Then, save it as a single track and fad that in and out. Am I understanding?

Like I said, I really don't know what I'm doing and trying to figure it out on the fly isn't working so well.

Exactly. Search for "automation" in any help files or on youtube cubebase videos and see what you can find. Like this- How To Use Automation in Cubebase

Thanks. The whole automation thing got completely past me. Looks like there will be quite a few ways to get it to do what I want it to do.
