Cull The Cab Herd? What would you keep and or sell?

Hey TB fam,
Would love advice and stories.
I do sessions and live work from small clubs to festivals. I have GAS issues and not enough space... 10 cabs, 10 heads and a few combos. I play EB and sometimes URB mostly rock, alternative, post-punk but need versatility because I use different basses from 60s flat to 70s grit. Sometimes crew and sometimes not, so lighter is good. Also Im not into to 10"s. Heres the list. WDYThink?

*Three 2x15 cabs; Road (doesnt need a road case), Kustom Krossroads (looks cool silver tuck n roll), and Sunn (compact)
*Three 1x15s
*Two 2x12 Avatars

The 2x15s have max punch for EB. But with URB more prone to feedback. The 2x12s are next in punch esp stacked and thats where Im leaning. The 1x15s are useful. Maybe lose all the 2x15s and keep a pair of 2x12s and 1x15s to mix and match for any task? What would or did you do in the Bass cab for booty, dept?

Your thoughts above sound like a great solution to me. Three cabs should give you options and cover all your needs.

Let's see them. What do they look like?

Would they match? Yeah. that's a thing.... but not always. (secondary to tone of course)

The cab brands don't matter. You should do a full inventory of what each cab has inside (speaker size, brand and model, and the ohms) and then go from there. Ultimately you want to keep better sounding and higher quality speakers like UK made Celestion or Italian made Eminence and other stuff. Sell off anything Chinese or otherwise low end.

I would probably sell all of them and buy something different that gets me inspired. But that is how I have been for the last 20 years. I like trying different gear.

I'd keep the 2 2x12's on hand for gigging and I would leave the 1x15's at my various rehearsal spaces, sell the 2x15's. I personally love a 2x15 but if there's feedback issues I'd use what works best 100% of the time.

what are the 115 cabs?

I also prefer 15s and migrated to using 2 115 cabs for most gigs and 1 for small ones.

Is there one 215 in your collection that sounds best?

If you have two matching 1x15s, keep those and one 2x12. If the 1x15s don't match, keep both 2x12s and the best 1x15. That's what I'd do.

Regarding the 2x15s, I think of them as I do 8x10s; I love the way they sound but they're just not practical to own for me anymore.

Earlier this week, I actually went through what your getting ready to do and downsized the number of cabinets I had.

I didn't consider the cab's brand name, driver size, name on the driver, how expensive the cab was, sentimental value, ect.

I kept only the cabs my ears really liked the tuning of and the cabs my back approved of.
Basically, the two cabs that I pretty much always used for jobs and have more than proven to be live band/gig capable.

Now I'm in the process of downsizing the number of amps I've somehow accumulated.
I've four class D heads.
If things go according to plan, I'll be down to three class D heads later today!

Get rid of the Road. So overbuilt, weighs a ton and a half. I had the 1x18 Road cab with the 440 head and am so glad I no longer have it.

Keep a 212 and a 115

I had the Road 220 head for a while in the 80's. It worked well enough for me until I got my brand new GK 400RB rev1.

I liked how the cooling fins in the front were perfect cigarette holders. Shoot me - it was last century!

Cooling fins on the 440 were too big for cigs but perfect for cigars, or a humongous rasta blunt.

By the way, the amp never got hot enough to need the fins. Putting a heat sink on was more a marketing ploy to get you thinking the amp had more power than it really did.

Great comments. The speakers are all pretty good. No Chinese. EVs, Black Widows and US Eminence. I play 90% EB and only about 10-20% URB live. A single 2x12 is kinda enough for a loud band on a big stage but with a pair of em stacked its proper! Below are the 2x15s. The Krossroads is a modern design (folded horn?) with vintage looks. The black one is a smaller lighter Sunn and no comparison to the big Sunns but great for guitar. The kustom 100W head distorts too soon so heres a few of the tube heads Carlsbro 200W, I also love my GenzBenz Streamliner 900.

Wow, looking at that Road cab brings back memories, makes my back ache all over again, 41 years later! I donated mine to a music school in '84, they were grateful to receive it. They were even happier to get my '72 Rick 4001. Don't miss the Road but I do miss that Rick.

Theyre Yamaha bass speakers and are pretty good, like Eminence, maybe sweeter. I got the cab empty and thought Id try em out, I have EVs and BWs as well.
