I don't necessarily miss my Wonderlove v1, but I do miss the loop. I wish the Xerograph Deluxe I'm using now had one. Maybe someday I'll grab a GR2 just to have a filter with loop available again.

The G2 is a great filter, I let go of mine after getting a Chromatron but kind of miss it
In my opinion the proton would be better for a funk/rock vibe, its more organic. The Xerograph would be better suited for electronic/ambient music, imitating synthesizer sounds & creatihg textured swells.
@MisticoRitualista that is not a bad representation. @Bran They are both very good envelope filters. The XeroD is more synth and the Proton is more funky… but they're both great… although both are pretty unobtainable in the market place.
@Matt Dean @MisticoRitualista Thanks a lot, I lean more towards a funky style and Spencer put on his site that an update is coming soon, so hopefully I'll be able to grab the Proton.

Just scored one of these on Reverb for less than half retail price. Beautiful looking pedal, does anyone have any experience with it?
How does the Proton compare to your old GR2? I have a Groove Regulator and I have been thinking about picking up a Proton if I can find a good deal on one. Are they different enough to justify keeping both?
I've owned a GR2 & a Proton V4. The GR2 is a simplified variant of the Meatball & the Proton is a take on the Mu-Tron III. Both are great pedals. The GR2 has the benefit of the effects loop but takes more time to dial in whereas the Proton V4 sounds good in just about any setting, still has its sweet spots for sure though & is very compact which is a plus.

I think I've had three GR2s and more than three Protons, I know, ridiculous, but I've been at this for a while and I'm not a collector, and when I want to revisit a pedal, I have to re-obtain it. Anyway, the GR2 and the Proton, are different animals. The GR2 is Spensor's take on the Meatball and the Mutron respectively. Two very different envelope filters. To my ear, the GR2, runs a little deeper and thicker… and the Proton is a little more responsive and quaky.
Currently:
Seamoon Funk Machine, not everyone's cup of tea but there's nothing like it.
EHX Bassballs, love it. Both with the overdrive and without.
SA Spectrum, this has it all plus a lot more.
Eventide H9, several envelope filter algorhythms are useful. It takes some time to find the sweet spots though.

Chunk Systems Agent 00 Funk MK-II (This has a HUGE variety of range and easy to dial in. Funk for days)
Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer (This has the Agent 00 along with many other fuzz/synth qualities)
Electro-Harmonix HOG2 (Has wah-wah, filter modes and can also add decay and attack to any notes as needed)
Source Audio C4 (tons of filters in this but I use it primarily as a synth generator)
Panda Audio Future Compact (Many filters can be found in here from subtle to very extreme)
EHX Bass Micro Synth (Not a very pronounced filter compared to the rest but can be easy to dial in if need be)
Boss SYB-03 (The filter modes on this have up/down sweep and have a unique sound)
Behringher BSY-600 (This has a wave filter mode that is unique)
Pigtronix Mothership 2 (the envelope on this is also easy to dial in but this is not for clean filtering. Dirty synth sounds galore)
Fuzzrocious Terrordactyl (Can be controlled via sensitivity, foot switch or expression. Top/bottom wah range controls)
Subdecay Prometheus ( This great filter has LP/BP/HP, up/down, and step filter with phaser. Love this filter)
Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah-Wah (best foot operated wah pedal and sound hands down)

So I really liked the Q Ball - tons of low end and the distortion option makes it extremely versatile, however in the end I like the slow/fast response option on the QTron+. I don't know why more filters don't have that option.
The Q Balls is fantastic, just not for me.
Thanks for the write up! I'll check out more demos and see how it is. I really like the dirt I stack with the filters I have so having a huge pedal with dirt I'm unlikely to use isn't the most attractive option.
Got lucky on the latest Xerograph drop, so hoping that's it's for me. Right now, I'm mainly using the Proton, though I really dig the release knob on the Joshwah.
Yeah man, it's a fantastic all-in-one pedal, and the distortion is very nice. One advantage that it has is that the distortion "fits" the filter very well. I'll just never use it.
