What is the gray-ish wood in the center? Walnut?

You're right, this is a koa top on walnut body. Here is a picture of the back of the bass.

well my Bee is boxed up and shipping back to Fred tomorrow

I knew it was coming, but it doesn't make it any easier... He's taking it to NAMM, I volunteered it... I'm excited it'll be a NAMM 2007 bass, but man is it hard to let it go back home to Fred!!!
