Custom Bass Wait Support Group Needed!!! [Part 2]

Greetings from a confessed long-time lurker, first-time poster! (detroit area)
Been wanting to post in this thread for a while. First, I needed photographic evidence to be sure this project was really, really happening. I commissioned Russ Laggan of Link Removed for a fretless extended fingerboard seven string (My design, including full-scale templates).
I’ve laid out the specs in a graphic format .

Then the "wait" part.

Russ had just moved to FLA from MI, and a lot of move-related stuff forced him to take a bass making hiatus. He even offered my deposit back. Given we philosophically agreed on the approach to the project (and about bass guitar functionality in general), I decided to wait out the hiatus. Theeeen Russ fhad a hard time finding a close-to-dry-enough piece of ebony of the required size.

First pictures came almost a year (to the day) after my deposit!

I originally wanted very light colored top wood, until I hit Link Removed. They have great stuff, but around a year ago, they had some INSANE pieces of Spalted Maple (some intense examples are on
Jersey Drozd’s Link Removed page in his website). The piece I found seemed born for my design. Looks like Tesla coil induced energy sprouting from the bridge!

Yes, elements of the bass do stray from conventional wisdom, but I think these elements will combine to meet my wants/needs/vision.

Until next time, thanks TB and TBers for so much good info. Maybe, finally, I’ll be able to contributin' .

RLK - that is amazing:eek: I have seen some incredible basses on this site but yours is right up there. Great design with some excellent design ideas to combat what would be a very heavy bass with all that wenge.

I am looking forward to seeing/hearing this one finished (as are you I bet)

Wokring on the details now for my new Listerud.

The details I have decided right now is;

6 string fretless
hollowbody (no holes though, so it will just be really thick and light)
Cocobolo fretboard
A modified version of the "Totem" shape I have on my 5 string.
17 mm string spacing
Think Im going with both magnetic pickups and piezo bridge from ETS, but not 100% sure there yet.

So we have quite some things figure out, but its going to be done before the summer kicks in :D Cant wait!

That's certainly a cool design. Keep us all updated !!

Listerud basses all look fantastic... I'm sure this one's going to be no exception !!

Novax licensing sets the scale IIRC @ 33" to 36" high to low.

The LeCompte TRX-5 is 34"-36". That was set by me. :D The TRX-6 is 33" -36". That was also set by me. :D Novax doesn't dictate the scale length. Only that the frets converge to a single point. But that doesnt happen in the real world. :hmm: FYI, the Novax patent has expired and it's no longer necessary to license "fanned-fret" instruments that are sold in the US. I need to remove that from my website. I will be calling my instruments "multi-scale".
