Custom Bass Wait Support Group Needed [Part 3]

I saw yours when i was last in Wil's shop. I liked the weight and feel of it, .

Cool.
So, do you like your basses heavy or light?

--- Wil's not really going to post the pictures of my build because he's moving away from that. It takes too much time, but I will keep you posted as he shares the shots with me.
Not shocked about that, thanks ahead of time for sharing.

The bass shouldn't be that heavy. He's gonna do hollow chambers. It should be around 9 pound or a little less. 10 maybe? I thought it would be around that... As far as your build I'm sure he is going to continue handling yours as he has done. Thats going to be a serious bass!!!

+1. RLK I'm really liking the way your bass is turning out...simple but oh so beautiful (very neat yet strangely hard trick to pull off). Keep those pictures coming please.

Thanks for the enquiry re my SEI 8. It is simply the best fretless I've ever played over (been playing some 20 years now) and is truly one of my basses for life. Hope my SEI 9 fretted works out as well...

The project is official! My modified, KCSM 17" wide by 2.5" semi hollow 7 string fretted Ramirez Custom Bass is in process. Wil emailed me the following last night:

I decided to do a full hollow wing style
thing, cutting out the chambers and then capping with the same
basswood instead of routing out the chambers. It'll be a lot more
interesting construction, but the end result will be better.

Here's pics of the upper wing being capped and the lower wing for
reference so you can see what I actually mean.

I'm gonna try and get your bass at the same stage as Lester's to build
them as a batch.

Oh, there's also a pic of the center block which will first get capped
with the bookmatched cocobolo before being joined together. Some
pretty interesting joinery going on with your bass.

Now for the pics

Here is the top wood again:

We're just a little past the original time-to-complete estimate.
I asked Wilser to upgrade from satin to a full gloss finish, which added to the build time.
I think I made the right call!

The bridge for this bass should be in any day (it will have a satin chassis).
I'm getting fairly geeked!

YOWZA!! that's beautiful!

I love the fingerboard wood!

Thanks Mr Stew!

It seems I did my last entry a bit too soon!
Still waiting to swap the chrome bridge for satin, but close enough to post these shots from Wilser:

Wilser’s post with a sound clip here.

If I were a tad weaker, I'd have it shipped, as is, tomorrow!

RLK, what a truly stunning bass! Beautiful, elegantly simple, great sounding and everything in proportion so that it does not look like a big bass. Really hoping it feels and sounds as good in your hands as it does to look at! :hyper:

Things are coming along nicely with my ACG 9.

We've decided to go with 2 magnetic pickups, the bridge one is in the larger housing and a narrower neck pickup. ACG pickups have different magnets for each position: ceramic in the bridge and an alnico in the neck, giving a combination of punchiness and roundness. I'll quickly say here that these are not custom magnets for the 9, the different magnet materials are offered as standard on all of Alan's basses.

Each pickup will have series/parallel switching, but there will be a third switch to flick between the bridge and piezo pickups. This means that I can run the piezos through the ACG-pre instead of just adding a plain, unshaped piezo signal to the magnetic pickups. Not being able to shape the piezo output might even mean that it's OK at best and unusuable at worst. Being able to shape the piezo signal and then blend it in with the neck pickup is going to give the bass more flexibility. In this mode, I could even have the piezo or the neck pickup on it's own, shaped with the ACG-01 pre.

It's one of those things which is easier to see than it is to write about. In a nutshell, is effectively a 3 pickup bass (neck, bridge, piezo) with a switch between pickups 2 & 3. The two signals being used go through the ACG-01 pre and can be merged together by the blend pot.

I took some pics during my visit to ACG HQ, but unfortunately left the proper camera at home so these are from my mobile phone. Needless to say, I really couldn't be happier with the way the instrument is turning out.

On this pic, you might be able to get an idea of the colour of the finished bass.

Here's the body sandwich and again, you might be able to get an idea of the final colour.

Here's a suggestion of the finished layout.

Here's the neck and fingerboard. When I looked at it, I thought it was going to feel rough but it's really smooth and well on it's way to being it's final texture.

On another note, Alan at ACG has built a 4 string fretless bass which uses an ACG magnetic pickup and piezo pickups from a Hipshot bridge. These signals then run into the ACG-01 filter preamp. This could be one of the only basses around which has a piezo pickup running through a filter preamp.

7 String;
Man what a killer project!
What are you going to do about your TB name?:hmm:;)
