I have recently acquired a custom made 5 string. I need to get a case custom made to fit this guitar. Have you any suggestions of a reputable company that can make this happen? I live in the Pittsburgh area and have not been able to find anyone local that can/will make a case to fit. Does anyone have experience with any custom case companies? Any suggestions as to who makes the best case?

What is it about your particular custom bass that requires you to get a custom case, as opposed to a stock, off-the-shelf case? Funny shape? Ridiculously long (or short) scale length? There are some very nice universal (sic) hardshell cases and/or hybrid gigbags that will accomodate almost any instrument. Almost.

My only experience with a truly custom case was an Anvil ATA Series flight case. They sent me a very comprehensive set of instructions for taking measurements of various parts of my bass and tracing a template of the body shape, I sent all that info back to them, and ~6 weeks later they sent me this gorgeous super-heavy-duty formfit beast that looks like it could survive a nuclear war and will certainly outlive me. But since it also weighs a ton, I rarely use it, and all my basses fit comfortably into a variety of gigbags and universal HSCs anyway.

Same here with an Anvil case. When i first got my Jazz Plus (with downsized body) i wanted a better case that what came with it so i had the local music store get me a custom fit anvil flight case. It was the bomb but it was heavy as heck and way too much overkill for riding around in the back of my old truck, so i quit using it and took it back to the store for them to sell for me. Because of the odd size it took a while and i took a serious bath on it.

Being a keyboard player also, I understand the flight case issue. I'm not doing any heavy touring, but if I do I will acquire one. What I am looking for is a light weight case with the fake velvet interior. My issue is the body shape and size. I've included a pic. This guitar weighs only about 8.5 pounds, so I certainly don't want a 75 lbs. case...lol

That will fit in MOST generic cases. Your horn (?) ends before the 12th fret; the horn on my Jazz, P, and P/J are all AT the 12th fret.

I am currently using a generic case with additional foam inserted to hold the guitar still inside. The cost of just the parts and wood of this guitar were more than $3000. It deserves more than a generic case with extra foam. Guardian had some interesting cases. I emailed them and am waiting for a reply. Thanks for that suggestion.

Yeah, check out the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], it's lightweight and has the velour ("fake velvet") interior, plus it accomodates a wide variety of body shapes & sizes. Double-check your instrument's dimensions, especially body length and width at both upper & lower bouts, compare to the specs on the Gator website. There's nothing about that pic of your bass -- which btw is lovely! Who made it? -- that suggests to me that it won't fit a Gator.

fwiw all of my basses fit this case, and that includes offset-waist Jazz Bass-type bodies, symmetrical-waist Precision-type bodies, laterally-asymmetrical Lakland bodies, long upper horn Modulus Quantum bodies, 34" scale basses with extra-long headstocks, 35" scale basses, etc. And yet none of them swim or bounce around inside the case; between the neck isolation block and the foam padding under the velour, the instrument is held very securely.

It was built by Keith Montgomery of MONTGOMERY GUITARS in Cleveland, TN. I ordered my bass and in less than a year it was completed and in my hands. The workmanship is beyond reproach. I picked the woods I wanted (Quilt maple, wenge, paduak, mahogany, and the blackest ebony I've ever seen) and he found them. Everything is crafted in his shop. This guitar is every bit as nice as any high end bass you'd find. I could not be happier! I have PRS Grainger 5 (now my second favorite), NT Thumbass, NT Warrior Signature, American MTD (Gouche), J basses, couple of other Warwicks, and a Pedulla. I've owned Fodera in the past. I'm no stranger to fine instruments. I must confess, I'm amazed by this guitar...shape, size, weight, balance, craftsmanship, incredible tone versatility...it's incredible. You should check them out.
