Customizing an old bass

I have a Squire p-bass, a very basic one, and i have become bored with its limited capabilities. So I've come up with the idea of buying things like new pick-ups and trying to add more controls. Before i did this though, I wanted to get some input on the idea. The biggest change I plane to do is add a bridge pick-up. What do you guys think?

Honestly, I'd keep the bass stock, and save for another instrument. Once you get the new bass, your will have the P-bass as a spare. It will cost you a couple of hundred dollars to make real changes to the P. That is a significant part of the cost of a new/used CIJ or MIA P or Jazz.
