CWB 20: Babes and Barbarians

R Bar was packed tonight, probably 40 some musicians were there including some local "name" players. It was a good night, I didn't sit in though.

I'm not in a good place right now. Tomorrow is the day that Jimmy went to the concert and then went missing early on the 7th. It's hard for me to deal with right now. If I'm missing for a day or so on here, don't worry. I'm just going to withdraw a bit and deal with family.

Practice didn't go well last night, and we may not be playing on the 14th now. The lead guitar guy had to miss last night because he's busy moving to a new place with his wife(?) and kid that he brought back from NYC. Then while we're waiting for the singer to show my rhythm guy starts talking about how his wife was offered a better job and is asking him to move back to Hermistion, OR and tempting him with some huge farm she saw for sale. He's also pretty busy with all the farm animals he went and bought over the summer.
Then when we reminded him about the 14th he says he can't make it cause the wife wants to go look at the property in OR. Then he brings up that my hubby wants to move to east of the mountains too and i had to fight back tears. I know that hubby wants to move there, and that once he’s out of school he’ll be looking for work both there, and here, but it makes me panicky to think of leaving everything I have here. So unless the lead guy can do a practice next week and wants to do the gig w/o the second guitar we may not do it, plus the rhythm guy isn't sure how much time he can dedicate to the band right now because of his job and his little farm.

So we finally did jam, but mostly stuff we always do and i was in a pissy mood. The idea of losing my band panics me, i need the music, it gets me through the winter and i can't picture myself going out and auditioning for another band. My band gets along so well, and they don't mind that i'm a mediocre player and can't sing. If i lose the band, i lose being able to hang out with other grownups. Although the drummer says they'll always be there for me and maybe we could just find another guitar guy if he moves... i hate the panicky feeling, i just can't think of stuff like this as exciting.

JaamE, change is change; without it we wither and die because we have quit growing. But you already know this don't you. I am a master at stating the obvious. Find a quiet spot and listen to your note....

Reminds me of a story. Mose Allison was sitting at the piano after the bar had closed playing one note over and over again. Finally the janitor couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Allison, I seen a bunch of folks playing that very piano and they all over the place. How come you just sitting there playing that one note over and over?"

Mose answered, "Clarence, them other folks was looking for it and I found it!"

Go find your note!

Hey!
Most folks here "hate music - because we love it so much" . . .
It puts us in bad places, we have to deal with other musicians (in and of itself, a rotten situation) and it creates a fleeting context where we are most "ourselves", only to see it ripped away.
It's tough, but you're tougher . . .
Please try and make time to "get out there" - auditioning is a two-way street. Something will make itself known to you. Plus, it seems like it won't be you by yourself on that "side of the mountains". And, if you have to go to Spokane (or wherever), you'll find some folks . . .
It may not be exciting in a "can't wait to spend my money" way, but it's exciting in a "bring it" kinda' way . . . :D

Occasionally i can see the idea of moving as exciting, but if i do i lose my job and the people there i've known for 22 years, my band, my only friends and i'll be too far from my mom and brother. It just panics me. I don;t do change well.

And music-wise i don't feel like i'm a good enough player to even go to open mics by myself. It's just too much, and the wrong time of year for me to deal with thinking about it. Right now he's not going anywhere until his current job ends in June. I just need to keep playing, i'm in too deep to give it up now.

Yeah, i know it, but i will fight it kicking and screaming...

I'm a mom, i don't come with a quiet spot, i barely know who i am most days. Right now music is what holds me together and keeps me true to myself.

I know how you feel JaamE. My. Band woes have been detailed here. Hopefully we are coming back together. Everyone has realized they missed it. I want it back. I can't motivate myself to practice for the sake of practice. My motivation is to show them how I have improved. Count me on the mediocre list too so I'm not too excited about auditioning either.

There is a whole forum of this stuff called band management. Some of those threads may be therapeutic in a 'I thought my musical life was a mess till I read about that guy's band - WHOA!" kind of way.

Yeah, i read that too, we've never had issues really, so it's comical to me. i know it'll resolve, but it changed my mood at practice which wasn't what i needed from the night.

I just sold the KTM..YAY!!


Jaame, my band has what seems to be a revolving door for female singers and rhythm guitarists. We've decided that doing the power trio thing is much easier. I find that even after a bad practice session, I find myself looking forward to coming back to play.

whew ... had a lot going on musically the last couple of weeks, now a little bit of a break. Next gig on bass is Jan. 6 with the Shoemakers, then the Vague Assurances hoping to make our Manhattan debut in late Jan. or early Feb. - we are flatterered, a club on the lower East Side reached out to us after hearing us on our website.

in the meantime ... and this gig I really have to practice for ... I've been called on to play keyboards while the assembled multitudes sing Christmas songs on Christmas Eve at Chez C3 in Brooklyn.

lol ... I'm going to have some fun with this. The keyboard is a decent Yamaha with organ and Rhodes piano and some other effects along with regular piano. I can hear seguing from God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen on organ into Garth Hudson's intro to The Band's "Chest Fever." :bassist:

Of course, this will be after cooking dinner with the seven fishes etc. ... it's the most exhausting day/night of the year. I'm sort of a grinch at heart but I go along with it since the rest of the fam digs it.
