It's not about being a gear snob, it's about knowing that just because something is the cheapest, doesn't mean it's the best value. You seem to almost have a fetish for gear that is cheap for the sake of being cheap. Most of us don't suffer from that.
Will cheap ass chinese $130 speakers work, in the sense of physically making sound? Sure of course. Will they sound great and be durable and reliable? Unlikely.
Meanwhile, I paid $140 for an amp and a pair of speakers (bought separately) that are actually great quality and durable and reliable. So you're focused on price, I'm focused on value, but I made out better on price AND value than someone buying these speakers. That's what people in this thread are trying to put across to you which you seem to be almost taking offense at. I appreciate that you were pointing out something you perceived as a good deal, but others have pointed out they may not be as good a deal as they might appear to be on the surface.
Omega Monkey,
My issue isn't with
your approach, you have been
informative, respectful and helpful. Never in anything you said did you belittle other musicians for their gear choices, but rather made very intelligent arguments in favor of a different approach. I can respect that. My issue is with the trolling going on by other posters that feel it their duty to slam musicians that aren't making the same choices they are as somehow inferior. Be it bedroom artist, occasional backyard party bander, regular weekend warrior, regional touring artist band, or national / international act, we should all be supporting others, and helping those that aren't as far down the road as we are. To do otherwise is the true and grave disservice to music.
I am not going to lie to you and tell you I don't find a certain amount of appeal to affordable equipment, but I also see the appeal to higher end gear. Although I have problems wrapping my head around the price tags folks pay for a LOT of gear. Don't get me wrong, I have no problems with someone paying whatever they want for a piece of gear, but again, be respectful of others gear choices and we are all good... I mean, there are certain instruments / amps / whatever that are popular with members here I think look and sound like absolute excrement, but I don't say a negative word about that. Or at worst I might mention that the particular item isn't quite my style, and find something positive to say about it.
And not all of my bargain hunting has been for new gear. The classifieds here have certainly helped me out more than once. While not super expensive, my Zoom B3 came from a member here, and I couldn't possibly be happier with it! Same goes for the pickups in my Jazz Bass. My Guitar amp admittedly is a cheap brand (Behringer) but it was also bought as an open box with full factory warranty. Works great, and I have seen the exact model amps, in VERY rough shape going on Craigslist for more than I paid...
Part of the issue it would seem goes back to the combo vs head / cab thing... I prefer, and am watching out for powered speakers, not passive speakers and amps. For ME it offers simplicity, for YOU it might not.
And these cheap Chinese speakers do offer a warranty you aren't going to get on used gear. The Vari series has been out a couple of years now, long enough to gain a reputation of sorts. I can tell from the reviews I see from people that actually OWN them, they seem to be workable, and I see no complaints about quality / reliability issues from actual owners. The word of someone that actually OWNS and uses a particular piece of equipment carries a LOT more credibility about that equipment than does the word of someone that does not own, and makes no claim to have any experience what so ever with the equipment in question.
While not this specific model, but rather the V2115, I have been to an event that used the Harbinger Vari series powered speakers, and they certainly did what the owner / DJ expected them to do. They sounded perfectly fine for the particular event. Chances are these are perfectly suitable as cheap stage monitors / vocal monitors.... And as I mentioned above, certainly workable mains for certain situations where you might not want to take good / expensive mains, like beach parties etc...
