Should change that to low. :D I went out last night to a bar that I have played at least a 100 times. The place only has seating for maybe 50. The band playing was using a pair of QSC K12s with one K sub a pair of K10s for monitors and a Presonus studiolive 16.0.2 for a mixer. Total cost new at musicians friend would be about 5k. I will be playing with a band tonight in a 200 capacity bar using some of my PA gear that will consist of the same mixer and Yamaha DXR12s, DXR10s for monitors and a DXS12 for sub.

Oh, if you're in the Houston area, I guarantee there are good deals to be had. That's the 4th biggest city in the country. I took a quick browse through the listings and didn't see a ton of amazing deals (at the moment), but there was a pair of CV subs for $175(!). Most of the power amps seem to be in the $150-300 range, which is about average. There's a range of speakers for mains, both in quality and price.

Like I said, you just have to always be on the lookout for the good deals and have a little cash on hand to be able to jump on them right away. Or, watch for what DOESN'T sell for a while so you have more bargaining power to get the price down (although it could just mean the guy is intractable on the too high listing price).

Anyway, if as a band you're not making $100+ a month, you don't need a pa yet anyway. Once you get more serious and active you can start acquiring stuff and in the mean time everyone can start saving their pennies to be able to get decent stuff. If you ARE making 100+ a month, there's not really any excuse for cheaping out, because literally 1 year or less of gigs can pay for a pretty decent system. You just might have to get it a piece at a time and have an incomplete/non-working setup in the mean time, but that's still the best way to go if you're on an extreme budget. And most musicians know other guys they can borrow bits and pieces from anyway for a show or whatever. And if not you need to start networking with those people. Just be prepared to reciprocate when you can (either back or "paying it forward").

I one found - and bought for my BL - a PAIR of used Peavey SP4's for $600.
We used them for about a year and powered them with a Behringer iNuke 6000 ($349).
That alone will handle most clubs/bars you'll hit..
If you want to add in subs later... so be it.
There ARE deals on CL - as there are on evilbay... one needs to be vigilant, patient and as @Omega Monkey said, be ready to pounce and have some cash available.

I own about $25k of PA gear, bought piece-meal with cash. NO DEBT!!
Mics (SM57, SM58, i5, e609, E835, D6, D112, etc.), 4 consoles (1 digital), bi-amped tops (modded Peavey SP2's with selenium horns), Yorkville powered subs, QSC, Crown and Yammy power amps for high, mids and 6 monitor mixes, 24x8/16x4 + various drop snakes, DRPA+, Yammy wedges, and so on - ALL bought for WAY less than retail.

Most of it sits idle :rollno: as there is no market for SR these days.. all corporate level in my area... small independents like are basically non-existent, and I'm too busy playing now to provide SR for bands...

The only reference I could find to CV in the Musical Instruments section of the Houston Craigslist is a Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazz Bass.

Absolutely zero references to Subwoofers for $175.00

Not everyone gigs at the volume those sorts of rigs are capable of. Heck the TS115A rig we use has gotten us shut down by law enforcement 3 times already... and that was no louder that 75% volume. Not everyone that goes out for live music wants to go home with tinnitus...

Use a hammer to drive a nail, use a screwdriver to drive a screw.

Well maybe if they sounded better that wouldn't happen. The band last night I could talk to my girlfriend without having to yell.

They obviously were using the FOH quite modestly then... or you were on the other side of the football field from it...

As far as Leo shutdown goes we play BBQ and similar house parties, volume is always a problem... Sound quality is no problem. Of course we don't sound like a studio recording. If you want studio sound hire a DJ. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Maybe gears knobs in the audience might be able to tell and that's a big might the difference in sound quality between cheap speakers and high dollar ones but the people that count the ones writing the checks don't know the difference and couldn't care less.

Well if you missed it earlier the bar has a seating capacity of about 50 people. I was sitting about 15 feet from one of the K12s. If you are getting told to turn down and having the police show up it is more likely the professionalism of the band. BTW how much do your BBQ and house parties pay? Maybe the people writing the checks for those events are not expecting a lot.

The intent of this thread was to inform folks of a bargain price on some low cost PA speakers. there are certain responses here that are blatant trolls. It's all well and good if you don't like inexpensive gear yourself, but be a decent human being and take Thumper's moms advice. If you can't say anything nice, STFU.

This is in no way any different than the trolls going into the effects forum and bad mouthing effects, or certain folks that always jump in on people wanting to know about a specific combo amp and telling them effectively they won't be a real musician if they don't use a separate head and cab....

Regarding QSC vs Altos and getting cops called vs being able to talk to your friend, a lot of times it's not about volume but about quality. When the sound is even and full, you don't have to crank it up as much to be able to hear it. It also has to do with how the drummer plays (bashing cymbals vs blending with the band), etc... If the sound is mostly concentrated in the midrange though, it's going to sound a lot louder and more obnoxious and is also going mask speech a lot more.

Most of those powered speakers are the same 250w (that they call 1000w because they're referring to peak power which is meaningless) anyway. So it's not about volume as much as it is about the character of the sound. It also comes down to who's operating the gear and if they know what they're doing.

Yeah, huge difference between passive subs and powered loud speakers. I have been watching for powered loud speakers specifically...

Well, you said you're on no budget, so you kind of have to take what you can get. Pair these with a $150-200 power amp with (300-450w at 4ohms is fine) and you will get a lot of sound out of them. Less than $400 to get a pair of CV subs up and running is a damn good deal.
