D. Lakin - first batch of basses!

Stu - Im talking from a dealer perspective. Sorry if I wasnt clear. Kebo

I figured that out. And I feel for you, man! You and all the other non-big box dealers. The price difference between brand new and mint condition used (even on Fender) is so huge, I don't know how any of you guys stay in business. I already said, I doubt I'll ever buy another brand new bass, and I think there must be a LOT of people just like me out there. It seems like the vast majority of people who would buy a brand new bass are new or less experienced players who are looking for their first bass and only want to spend $300 up to maybe $1000. And for those guys, saving a bit of tax and shipping money and buying their SR305 or Shecter Raiden or whatever from MusiciansFriend.com has got to be pulling a lot of them in.

Like I said, I don't know how y'all do it, but I give you much respect for figuring out how to make it work for you!

As usual I'll reserve judgement until I actually play one. Call me crazy.

I have been surprised before so I know the possibility exists that it could happen again. It might not. Good luck, Dan.

On the used Skylines being undervalued, I disagree. They're selling for exactly what the market will bear. Like pretty much everything else. You could always pay more if you like, I as a seller wouldn't mind.
:)

Thanks Stu - I've been a used/vintage bass retailer for close to 20 years. Bottom line is we cannot compete wit the big box stores. There retail is our wholesale. Forget about minimums, we cant - IMHO, theres a massive act of collusion between major mfgs and big box to squeeze the small guy. It keeps prices up and production down. IE: If you make 100 basses and make 100.00 each, you have 10k profit. If you make 50 basses and make 200.00 each, you have the same 10k with half the effort.. Thats my conspiracy theory.... Selling vintage and used, we try to sell the best with the best value. You pay for our experience. We make sure every item is described as such, and its out of the box to you set up perfect to your requirements. At the end of the day, yes we take returns but we're 90% under industry standards.. Me and guys like me survive on service and peace of mind. Guys like Dan Lakin survive on the same. The good guys stick around.. If you go to a guitar show, MANY of the dealers are great friends with other dealers. For us, its a social event of sorts. One of my best friends was my biggest competitors. So, yep, its tough but right now, no one is getting rich off this...

Now that I can understand. More respect!

You're 4 hours from me. If I ever make it up that way, I will definitely have to stop in and check out your store!

While I respect and appreciate the good quality of Mr. Lakin instruments, and I do like the matching headstock, I wouldn't mind some real originality thrown in. I would definitely try one if I'd see it in shop, if they are top-notch quality build- and sound-wise, than it's ok I guess, still some real twist to an old design would be great.

Stu - If you makeit to the Oaks Pa show in 2 weeks, stop by,, The cooler will be filled.. BTW - what are you riding? I have an HD Heritage.

What is the Oaks show?

I have an R1200GS for road trips and hauling the girlfriend and I have a GSX-R1000 for, well, road trips and hauling a**. :D I actually rode the GSX-R from CA to VA last Labor Day to get it here after I moved here. A buddy rode the BMW here for me. If you haven't yet (I can't remember), you should go over to this thread and post a pic of your ride:

Riding a Gixxer across the country is hardcore. Well done. I rode my ZX-14 from Boston to Memphis and spending days in the crouching position got rough after a while.

Glad you linked that thread. Didn't know it existed.

The Oaks show is aka Great American Guitar Show, AKA The Philly Guitar Show.. Google it up..

A Gixer for distance - Dude, props in a big way.... My HD, Im hurtin going from NJ to Laconia or Lake George..

Thanks. That trip was cool. Even cooler was a few years back, I did a 4 Corners Tour on a ZX-9R Ninja. 14,300 miles in 30 days. Tallahassee to Tijuana to Vancouver to New Brunswick to Key West back to Tallahassee. With a lot of extras along the way. Now THAT was a trip!

Kebo, thanks for the intel on the guitar show. I'll look it up and see if I can fit it into my schedule. Sounds fun!

Awww, man! Your butt just needs some trainin' up! Then that trip will be just one long day's ride in each direction. Okay, one really long day. :-) I've ridden 1100 miles in one day (around 20 hours) a few times, but haven't yet gone 1300 (Boston to Memphis). Now that I've got this BMW, though, that should be a cake walk!

I should clarify that trip to Memphis took me 3-1/2 days. ;)

You guys are way overthinking this - it's just another bass brand in the world of basses. If you like them, buy them and play them, if not, choose something else. I am happy to have more choices, and an expert like D. Lakin building basses is certainly good for the consumer.

NO FIVE STRINGS? WHAT A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME! /sarcasm

Slightly off topic, this is from the Brad Houser article:
Initially Dan made a list of “60-70 of my favorite bass players”, among which Bob Glaub’s name figured prominently. Fortuitously, Bob had rented a Lakland for a session in Los Angeles, the two of them met in ’96 at a NAMM show, and their collaboration was born. Dan cites Glaub’s track on, “The Pretender” by Jackson Browne as, “The perfect bass track”. Hard to dispute that one………….

Let's have some love for Bob Glaub:

the Squier in question is Precision 5 with super-wide neck. it has been hot-rodded to the nines, mainly due to nordstrand pickups. however, the addition of a bone nut was THE most startling change to the bass. EVERY note on the neck suddenly 'sang' more. the difference was NOT subtle. a couple of luthier friends of mine had long ago told me how important nut material is. as for those who think that my mention of owning a Squier destroys credibility---.........nevermind.
