D Standard tuning on a 4 string bass

Hi all,
I Recently decided to tune my bass to D standard. I've just noticed a lot of web commentary on lower tuning with basses. Some mentioned having the bass professionally handled, I'm assuming for truss rod adjustments, etc.. others just opted for the 5 string. I'm just wondering if it is common for a player to just willy-nilly D-Tune without major incident. Seems to be working fine for me... some buzzing but that is actually the effect I was going for. What are your experiences with lower tuning a 4 string?

Depends on the bass. I've dropped a step down upon occasion and seldom encountered significant (if any) issues, although doing a setup for the specific way you intend to tune and play your bass isn't a bad idea if you want to get the best out of your instrument. I myself don't like buzz or clank - so I'd definitely do something with the relief or height of the action if I constantly ran into that and couldn't eliminate it with different strings or my playing technique. But if it works for you, no problem!
