D'Addario Chromes User Group- Chromeys Speak Out!

If you buy the superlight set they're fairly well balanced. That's ECB80, 40-60-75-95....I tend to sub a 55 on the D string but it's not absolutely necessary. I find the 95 E string blends better tonally than a 100.
Say what? Interesting. I've been wondering about their new "Power Flats" for a while: they used to be groundwounds, and I liked the set I once bought but my acidic sweat killed it in about a year; then I read they changed them into flats proper. So, they're actually Chromes? Coloured ball-ends too? Silk colour?
A lot of folks used to say Fender Flats are Chromes because they're made by D'Addario and have colored ball ends. They are not Chromes.
I can attest to this as a current user of the Fender 9050CL. I'm a "Fenderite", not a Chromey.
Or, I should say I'm an ex-Chromey.

I have Chromes on multiple basses. I know people don't love the Fender preamp on the AmDlxJazz, but with model J DiMarzios and the poles adjusted for balance, and Chromes, in active mode I am getting a MASSIVE clean tone that my hard rock band just loves. I also have them on my stock Aerodyne used in a classic rock band, again perfect sound for the gig. In both cases, use a pedal or 2 when grind or edgier dirt is needed.
Power flats don't have the color code but do have the blue silk color ends. They feel the same I have played D'addario's for years. the price is going to be the same, go with the real chromes.
Put together a parts bass and got a custom set from Jason of 50/65/85/110.
Never been much of a fan but of all the strings I've tried on the bass the chromes with the Geezer pups just sound fantastic.

I got a set of custom chromes 50/65/85/110
I had a parts bass and thought this is what it needed and I was right.
It was sounding great then I took them to rehearsals and after the second one my E has thudded out big time.
The A sounds nice and the D and G are still bright but was expected.
But the E is boomy and lifeless, is this common?
Do I just have to give more time?
They sound awful live now.

My Fender Jazz wore a set of the ECB84 (40-60-80-100) for the first 4 yrs of my owning it. I was a casual noodler for the first 3 yrs so didn't really care too much about the tone. But when I did get serious about being a church bassist in the fourth year, I did start noticing the 100-E sounded kind of thuddy and dull, while the 40-G was annoyingly bright (or "twangy").
I'm kind of surprised this is happening to you so quickly. Maybe they need to be played in a bit more considering how new they still are?

Just hard to find flats in this gauge, makes it limited.
I've had chromes on one of my basses for over a year now. I could have swore I had the same problem with my B string that you have with the E. It was right around seasonal change where I'd have to do a little set up and before the new set arrived in the mail they went back to being great. That was 2 months ago. If you can afford a few days to see what happens or call who you bought them from or D'addario they'll likely send you another set,

The first set (after a long life) rests comfortably in a case waiting for a broken string to occur and then save the day. "That will do pig!"
The second has turned into creamy fudge goodness on my Hi-Flyer and is going nowhere.
The 3rd (after a long break-in period) sit on my RumbleKat and are starting to perform well.
I've stopped looking for strings. These are what I want to sound like.

I was a pure TI guy, but I have recently changed my 5r's over to Chromies. I like these alot for this application.
