When I switched over from guitar to bass, I was really disappointed with my sound... Until I found Sundogue's (sp?) mega flats thread and tried some Chromes. I'll take a number.
Chromes on bot my Fender's P & J, but I like the mediums on the Jazz best, for some reason. Same gauge as on the P, but the Jazz neck (Fender Jazz Special) just has some feel the P doesn't. Also have a set on my Epiphone Les Paul Special, made a huge difference on it as well.
I have Chromes on one of my Mustangs. I bought it used (MIJ Mustang) and the seller strung it with them (new set) when he sent it too me. I had originally planned on taking them off immediately. But when I got the bass and actually put it through its paces, it sounded good enough for me to leave them on. I switch and wxperiment with strings a lot, but haven't touched those.
I've had many bad experiences with flats in the past. They've always sounded muted and dead to me. But, the Chromes, I must admit, work well on the Mustang. I don't think I'll ever go completely flatwound, but I do have that bass and another strung with flats. Of all the flats I've tried (besides the new EB cobalt flats), Chromes are the only ones that have sounded decent to me. They also do not get buried in the mix as some bottom-heavy flats have for me over the years.
So, yeah, I'll "come out of the roundwound closet" and admit that the Chromes are working for me on that bass. Gotta give credit where credit is due. Plus, I won't need to change the strings every couple of weeks!
So does one bass with Chromes (that I play quite often these days) admit me??? Even though I'm... a... bi-stringual???

Have had a set of Chromes on my Jazz bass for a few years. They are there to stay, super versatile. Easy to live with thanks to no more nagging little guy in the back of my mind whispering "maybe your strings are dead."
I believe I use .45-100 on a P/J fretless. Great sound, great feel, very versatile. Haven't changed my strings in years, that's why I'm not sure of the gauge I use, lol...

Hi - noob here so $0.02. I tried a "balanced set" from BSO of 45-60-80-105 long scale on a 24-fret 34". I like them but the 105 felt like a bridge cable so I bought a 100. The 100 does feel more comfortable and I personally don't mind the slightly lower tension. They still feel pretty balanced to me FWIW. In retrospect, the ECB84s most likely would have been fine for me. I like the way they sound on my cheap PJ bass, not too bright, not too much thud and the tone and pickups still have control and unique character if that makes sense.

Haven't read all the posts, but I've been using Chromes for years. If the bass is loaded with flats, they are the D'A ECB84 set (.040 - .100); currently on a '51 P reissue, a Gretsch 5440LSB, and a Dillion 335-004 bass. Like the smooth old-school sound and feel, and the lack of tension. I've tried Fender and LaBella flats; no good for me.
I just put chromes on my jazz bass, and really like them. Several strings I've used before (esp. the elixrs) had what seemed to be weird overtones, and these absolutely do not. Just nice bass tone. If I just sat and played at home, they might be a little boring, but they sound great out and about.
I dig em and use them on a bunch of basses. They have a unique character compared to other flats. Out of the pack, there is a lot of top end which makes them great for just about any application. Over time they mellow really nicely and sound like a very traditional flat. Great strings.
I've got several sets of Chromes, one of which is over 10 years old! I'm in an experimental mode right now but if you want to play flats AND be heard in the mix, Chromes are a great choice!
I'm in and I'll take a number if it's being offered. I have chromes on my main player (a CV Jazz). Between them and the Jbass I have the upmost of versitility and yet I don't ever feel as though I'm compromising. Pretty rad strings. And I love the high tension
I have tried an assortment of different flats, and have landed on the Chromes as my main strings of choice. I have 5 basses, and 2 of them strung with chromes. The short scale uses LaBellas, I have one bass with rounds, and on my fretless I still have the first set of flats I tried. It will probably get Chromes, too.
I am kind of a balanced tension geek, so my Chromes sets consists of single strings in the gauges 045 060 080 105. This is the closest approximation to balanced set I have found with Chromes. These gauges works great with my tuning, which is DGCF.

I recently discovered flats and I'm in the middle of transitioning to Chromes on all my guitars.
I love them on my Jazz Bass V, but I noticed they have sometimes a tendency to being too boomy, while I care on the low mid tone the most.
I know it's not the main topic of the thread but what are your prefered settings on Jazz bass with chromes on it ?
