Daddario flats....ugh..way too bright!

Has anyone come across this. Both my P basses wear them but one set is much much brighter than the other set which are quite thick and heavy sounding....is this a manufacturing problem with this string or something to be expected if one set is a few years older then the other.
The difference is light and day..

How old was the old set, bro? I have the same flats two years old and I get a nice fat tone. But the day that I´d move to a new set I know that my bass it will loose part of his magic.

Are we talking about Chromes? I snagged a set and found them to be too bright for me. That was the first set of flats I ever tried. I might give then another shot some day.

I've never liked D'add strings in general,and the Chromes i've played don't even sound like flatwound strings to me. (Too Bright and Clangy).Supposedly they have a new set that is lower tension,and softer in feel,which would be a step in the right direction.

D'Addario should make low tension chromes. They'd probably sell.

This is exactly why i love my chromes! Different strokes for different folks and all that...

They def mellow well with usage. Consider it incentive to practice.

They break in really nicely. Keep playing em. Preferably after you have eaten fried chicken and haven't washed your hands.

Seriously be patient- the payoff is worth it!

Could always just roll back your tone knob until they deaden a little...

I like the sound of a nice fresh set of Chromes, but if you want them to dull try setting your tone knob low until they break in.

They're known as gateway flats for a reason. They start out sounding not too different from rounds and getting you hooked on the feel as they ease into full broken in flats tone. It's awful. Insidious, really.

Any flats will take a few weeks of heavy playing to come into their own. Patience...

Yep. For me it takes a couple of weeks before they begin to settle down. When they do, I love 'em.
