D'Addario NYXL Bass Strings

Just to follow up on these, I think I would like these strings fine as a 4 string set but I don't really like the B string (non-tapered) at all. It dies rather quickly and does so with the panache of a drunk dancer. However the rest of the set is still very lively and has a nice tone to it so they will get relegated to being used on my fours. I am glad I tried them but they are not my choice for my 5ers.

Hmm? I'm on my third set on my Fender Deluxe Jazz V with the non tapered version straight off the shelf from a local dealer. B string has been consistent on each set. In fact, I was just thinking of how the B string actually sounds like an extension of the other strings. It sounds full and even. Better B than on any other strings I've ever tried to be honest. Maybe my bass is set up where all the strings complement each other perfectly. I don't know, but I have had the best experience using these strings. They last long, they articulate beautifully, they feel great on my hands, B string is delicious and they are very well balanced! What more could I ask for? Maybe it would be a total different story with another bass. I can't imagine what issues other players might be having with them... But with my current combo, I can't see myself changing to other strings for any reason any time soon... Bottom line, they are pretty inspiring!!

I put a set of the mediums (45-100) on my jazz back in June, and I love them. I was having issues with string balance because my bass has a vintage 7.25" radius fretboard and my pickups are flat. Now that the strings have died to my liking and the setup and pickup height have been tweaked, I think these strings will be staying on for a long time. They sound thick but also articulate, and the balance is basically perfect.

Found these today when I was looking for a new set of strings for my five. I really like them in both tone and feel. They are pretty flexible and bright but not clingy or metallic sounding. So far so good and the set feels balanced with a good sounding B string. Loving these strings so far.

Finding the 105 E too soft/45 G too thin and yet the 110-55 set feels overly stiff, I can't see any single NYXLs available...I may revert back to the standard XL or good old 7250s and just change them more often as it was a longevity thing that led me here.

BassStringsOnLine has all kinds of D'Addario singles including NYXL's.
All my 4 & 6 string NYXL sets are put together on BassStringsOnLine.

Sadly no 110 for some reason though. Ideally I'd need 110, 90, 70, 50... Seems crazy they do so many combinations but haven't thought that anyone might want a heavier 'hybrid' set, jumping straight to a ridiculously stiff 75/55...

You're right, strange that they have 55-110 set (55, 75, 90, 110), but don't provide 110 (also 55 & 90 actually) as singles. I'm sure @SLaPiNFuNK has the answer.

Never the less, you can still get those gauges you'd prefer by buying the 55-110 set and the 50 & 70 as singles despite higher cost.

Don't know whether @Tigerpig would notice... but few times I deliberately slimmed down the gauges of my D'Addario strings by .005 decrements to get the (more balanced) tensions I'd prefer:
  • FlexSteels from .045 .065 .085 .105 .135 to .045 .060 .080 .105 .135;
  • Chromes from .040 .060 .075 .095 .132 to .040 .055 .075 .095 .132;
  • Chromes from .045 .065 .080 (yeah, only 3 strings for the fretless side on Ibanez SRAS7) to .045 .060 .080.

Thanks guys, I did mention I'd tried the 110-55, crazy overkill heavy imho. The 55/75 just feel ridiculous yet the 110/90 feel more substantial in a good way to the 105/85 as the NYXL have a bit more give (that I think robs the thicker strings of some 'body'). I see they don't do a single 90 either. So,...all you gotta do D'addario, and it will mean you sell more strings, so you'll like the idea is....MAKE A HEAVY HYBRID SET or SINGLE 110/90!!! :D

On a whim, I installed a 45-105 set of these on my Fender Jazz Bass. The thinner core makes these more flexible than I expected, and while I have generally preferred a somewhat stiffer feel, so far so good. Not sure if it's the flexible core or some other attribute, but I find playing "tricks" like Abe Laboriel-style strum rolls is easier on these strings.

The sound is clean and refined, very open. Low end is reasonably full and tight. The 45 G string sounds a little bit twangy, but I've only had the strings on since yesterday; it may well settle down some more.

I have traditionally liked either GHS Progressives or Rotosound 66 on this bass, and I think this would also be a very good set to use.
