D'Addario NYXL Bass Strings

For electric bass guitars! I got an email from D'Addario about beta testing them before they are finalized and marketed. You have to enter to be chosen. I am not sure if this is going to be totally random or not. The email did state that if you tried to enter more than once you would be eliminated from consideration.

Well here's the guitar string description:

It seems that tuning stability is the main selling point for the guitar strings, which isn't much of an issue for bass. I wonder what the bass specific features will be.

If this transfers to the bass strings, and it should, the "fusion twist" of the core coupled with the new wrap wire formulation will be a most welcome advance. I'll take higher output along with enhanced mids. Greater tuning stability and longevity are the icing on the cake. They just have to sound good doing it.

GHS and others have their 'Alloy 52'. Ernie Ball has their secretive Cobalt & Iron alloy.
DR has their mysterious 'Quantum-Nickel' alloy for their 'Pure Blues'.

I wonder about the pricing, as the NYXL guitar strings are $12 PER SET which is $9 more than a regular set. So I guess that means the bass sets will be $60. Ouch! Nah surely they won't be that much.

That was my thought too. I'd guess them closer to $40 for a 4 string set.

$40 D'Addarios better be amazing. Bass players are a finicky bunch.

Guitar Centers are marketing the guitar strings hard. There are whole displays with rows and rows of these things. I've yet to see a guitar player pick up a set and take them to the register.

I'm waiting to see if I got chosen. They gave me a couple packs of the guitar version when those were being beta tested.

I signed up. Have not gotten a confirmation yet, though. The XL's are less than $20 for a 4 string set which is right in MY wheelhouse. $40-$60 a set for bass strings? No sir! Not me!

Man I remember the days when you walked into a music store and asked for strings and they would say "All we got is these here" usually followed up by "Why you changing strings they break?" Today is a great day to be a bass player quality inexpensive gear and enough string choices to make your head spin I'm going to keep my eyes on the release of these strings.

I quite like the guitar strings. If stainless steel guitar strings weren't available I'd be using the ny's exclusively. Granted I've gone further and further away from stainless on bass and am basically all flats now so we'll see how this works out

25 years ago I used to buy D'Addarios and Rotosounds from from my local guitar shop for $20. It's amazing to me that the price is essentially the same now.
