Does anybody has any experience comparing the MBD-1/2 to the Grizzly bass or Pork Loin? So far those have been my favorite OD's.

I was one who use the modded pork loin as a main and fav OD for a while. I got the MBD1 to try it and almost immediately swapped the two out on my board. I love the modded pork loin. It is very similar to the MBD in ways. But in the end the MBD had more depth and low end response to my liking. It’s just a better OD imo. And it had a much wider gain range in the way it reacts to your low end. The MBD does I mean.

I have no exp with the grizzly. Another one to look at possibly is the gasoline. I’ve heard it’s very similar to the MBD yet different.

Idk about the grizzly, gasoline or even the pork loin. But I know this much, the magic lies in the MBD’s low passed clean blend and how it mixes with your signal and the gain of the pedal. The MBD is just “it” for me.

The MBD-1 replaced a Pork Loin on my board.
I was using the Pork Loin as a low gain Overdrive and the MBD-1 just sounds better in every scenario which I was using the Pork Loin.

I'm interested in an MBD-2 but so far haven't liked the demos I've heard of it. I'm looking for a light overdrive that is amp like but not overly saturated. The videos I've seen of the MBD1 with the gain control down still seems to have more distortion than I'd want. Anybody using either MDB 1/2 as a light OD?

I use it as a light OD. My band even calls it my "clean" tone . It adds the right amount of flavor and allows me to sit in the mix just right. If I want more gain or OD, I kick in another drive pedal in front. It really brings it alive and matches well with the dozen or so other pedals I have tried with it. It's by far my favorite OD pedal.

I use it the same way, for a meaty, thicker clean tone. If I want more distortion, I usually kick something on in front of it, like a Darkglass X7 or something.

Meaty is a really good way to describe the MBD. Probably more than most other Overdrives out there too, imo. The way the low end comes through the MBD, either clean or saturated via the Depth knob, is the epitome of a meaty Overdriven tone.

The Gasoline compliments the MBD incredibly well. It’s not similar to the MBD though. They kind of hit different areas. Both are great at low or high gain settings and both are very versatile but where the MBD is fat and heavy, the Gasoline is lean, mean, and more transparent. I’ll never sell mine. Chances are I’d never be able to find another one if I did LOL. The MBD and Gasoline have been my dirty duo for a while now and there’s no better pairing IMO.

You're right about that. I remember occasionally seeing them on reverb. Now they’re like hens teeth.

Reiner Amplification. @father of fires and @Fuzzbass probably know a lot more than me. I think Fuzz even has a one-off Reiner amplifier.

It's one of those pedals I never got to try in my quest for eternal clank with fuzz around the edges. My Oxford has won out over every pedal I've tried so far, but it doesn't have bottom like the MBD-1. (But it also sounds very clanky and thick)

(I might know a guy who's loop/blender can fix that lowend, though! )

I think renier makes the gasoline. Boutique company. And tech 21 makes the Oxford. It’s one of their character series. Like the VT.

@JGR is the maker. They are no longer in production. Not sure how many were made and I think Jonathan has said he might revisit them in the future if there was a demand. He's been working on a tube amp recently and I think just finished the last one of that run. The Gasoline's pop up used from time to time still.

Not to run off topic on Damnation, but the MBD-1+Gasoline clips I've heard were all excellent.

Maybe worth noting and taking solace in the fact that the Gasoline I owned for a time was definitely not the pedal I would go to for clank with fuzz around the edges. It was a very smooth distortion that was more like pushing an amp into clipping than anything that got into full clanky fuzzy territory. It was a great pedal, but it sounds like a different animal than what you're after. To your point though, a Gasoline feeding into an MBD-1 would likely be a very intense sound.

Ah, I see. What I was talking about is amp-like as well. But that amp happens to be an old Peavey MarkIII/MarkIV
