Danelectro Basses

I'm a Danelectro lover. My dad and uncle have a few Danelectro instruments so I think my love of these quirky instruments is genetic. I picked up a newer Dano '63 bass and I'm just interested to see how many people here like or dislike them and why.

I have this model in the long scale, aqua finish (just like the one on the brochure in your pic). I like mine, quirky retro looks and very solid instrument. Surprisingly strong and growly output. I got a great set up on mine by touching up the nut slots, adjusting relief, and lowering the bridge/saddles. Intonates great. Easy player.

My best-sounding bass is a Danelectro Rumor ($199). I installed a DiMarzio Model P pickup and Hipshot bridge, and it now beats my 2008 American Standard Precision and G&L L-1000!

just got this dead-on 58 3 weeks ago new on closeout (it had been sitting on the showroom floor for almost a year and they dropped the price to $190...nice!). still trying to decide if i like the ghs ultra-light strings i put on it but i love the sounds you can get with it. and i love not being in pain at the end of the night...shoulder issues.

I liked playing my dad's 90's blueburst longhorn when I was starting fiddling around with bass. The longhorn basses are really cool. Anyone own or have played some vintage Dano basses? My dad has an old Copper short horn that has strings that play like rubber bands. No strings in this picture but it has La Bella danelectro flats now. (it was dug out of a landfill)

I have a Dead-On Longhorn as well. I cant get over the bottom end I get from that thing with a foam mute and heavy on the neck pickup! Kills my PBass on some stuff Ive recorded wthout a doubt, and super fun to play to boot!

I'm a Dan-Fan from way back in the '60s. I grew up in a town between the two towns where the Dano factories were located.

I have several originals and RIs in my collection including 3 Silvertone "dolphin nose" basses from the early '60s.

LOVE Dano' stuff!!!!!

I had to part with my blueburst Rumor a few months back... but i'm GASing majorly hard for both a Dano' Hodad bass and guitar. I'd like a Longhorn at some point as well.

I know a BUNCH of indie bands that use Dano' stuff... Elf Power and Dum Dum Girls in peticular...

I have this in short scale. I really like it. Retro cool and no BS tone. Does it play or sound like my Rickenbacker? No. That's the whole point. It's like a cheap bass from 1963, that's why I'm keeping it!

I love my '63. I pulled off the tape, painted the pick guard, wired it VVT and installed new tuners so I could use any string I wanted. I have Roto 88's on it now and it THUMPS. I also installed strap locks on it and moved the front one to the top of the horn. It is the only "cheap" bass that I have really liked. The neck profile is just like my Gibson SG and I find it very comfortable.

I think I am going to move the tuners down at a angle like a Warwick. They kind of look like Micky Mouse ears now with the little Coke bottle headstock.

I have a '63 reissue in Surf Green and it's a very nice bass. Problem is that it's one of a dozen and it's one of the last I reach for, so I'm going to sell it soon. Nothing wrong with it, just not one of the "go to" basses. Took me a while to decide to turn loose of it, as I do like it!

EDIT: it's in the classifieds now.

a girl i used to be in a band with had the reissue longhorn, and i always liked the sound, but thought it was too fragile and hard to work on. i picked up a used but clean :cool:hodad bass from ebay for $175,a major improvement in tuning keys, bridge, and it was a full 34 inch scale, too. it could use some wiring/shielding help, but plays great, and has a deep bass tone like nothing else, with a twangy snap to the high frequencies. i like it,esp, for the $.

Every time I pick up a Danelectro bass I feel like I'm going to break some critical component just by holding it.

Am I just a lumbering sasquatch or do other people have a similar opinion?

I guess you're just a lumbering sasquatch. :)

I have used and abused Danos from the early 60s and they still work fine. My first edition RIs seem pretty sturdy as well except for the thin vinyl tape on the sides.

Danos are light, but not all that fragile. As with even my heaviest, more expensive basses, I wouldn't want to intentionally test its tensile strength. Played with respect and within reason, a Dano will hold up just as well as almost anything.
