Danelectro Longhorn Players

I get to own an old original Danelectro Longhorn Bass Instrument daily. Purchased used. No history available. I don't play it a lot. It is NOT FOR SALE. It is probably just too cool to even risk touching it. It is possibly the coolest thing I own. Not sure, it may be the coolest item ever built on this planet. If you own an old one, might want to keep it. I do not know anything about any reissues. NO comment on that. RADAR LOVE (studio version) was mentioned. Highly recommend that all bass players listen to that in total detail. That is a (or the...) badass bass section forever. NOBODY driving turns that one down when it arrives on the radio. Not sure if we will ever fully know if it was a Longhorn -- I suspect it was. Decades ago, after that song changed my life -- I saw that album cover. Within nanoseconds -- my first question was -- what kind of bass is that? OK THAT IS IT. That bass is going to get played. A lot. Thank you for your participation.

Seriously. That does not surprise me. There was a Gibson EB-3 in my hands for about a year. I remember how extremely deep the low notes were. Could really get down there. Might should have kept that one. I still think the old Danelectro is totally grand.

VOX sidewinder?
oh man - those old vox amps were awesome. 1st heard was a guy playing through a Berkeley -- then one of the coolest amps EVER -- the VOX Royal Guardsman. I am sure VOX bass amps were cool. Another really awesome sounding bass amp -- (appx 1971) KUSTOM -- 100 watt - single speaker amp. For recording - look out. One odf my bass amps -- another favorite brand - Ampeg 115 100 watt.

Guys, i want you to inform you about my all time bass hero from the Netherlands. He is from the 55 years old rhytm&bluesgroup the Bintangs. They are still alive and touring. Link Removed Here an example of an solo with a long horn:

With kind regards Jur

:wideyed: This should be required viewing for all those people who say Danelectros are too cheap and fragile to gig with. That was... intense. Fragile my dyin' derriere...

I am privileged to own a Danelectro Longhorn bass. Bought it used -- at a GC -- it is a much older one. NOt a reissue. It is not for sale. It is really too cool to play very much -- it just is. When I do play it, it is just really cool. Will get quite loud.......

Much as I would love to own - and play - an original Longhorn, it ain't gonna happen. 'Cause the people in Neptune, NJ never made left handed Danelectros. So, I have to be happy with my 2 '98 Gen 1 Korean DC59Pros, and my Gen 3 Korean Longhorn (no lefties from the Gen 2 Chinese Danos, either). But, the DC59s have reverse-engineered clones of the American pickups, so... I'm a happy camper. And, I have no problem living with the slightly hotter p/u's in the Longhorn. La Bella 760FX's fix that "problem" quite nicely; long scale 760FX's definitely get "that Dano sound" from one of the DC59s, too...

That looks too short from the back to be a Longhorn. I own both a Jerry Jones LH and a Single cut like a Danelectro. Ron is more likely playing a Dan Armstrong modified Dano made in the late 60’s.

The Armstrong modded Dano is definitely a contender, but to me it looks like it might be the overall shorter Longhorn though it's never really shown.

I still have my Jerry Jones LH but my single cuts are long gone. I also have a first version RI of the Longhorn Pro and several other RI Danos but my favorite Danos are my Sears Silvertone Model 1444s from the early '60s. I found a total of three of them for very good prices over the decades at local yard sales. I live near the factories and a Sears store so they're all over the place here. One is in minty condition, another is in well played and a bit abused player grade and the third I bought as parts in a box with a neck someone had defretted and reprofiled to 1.5" nut without modifying the nut (I rectified that with a trip to Home Depot for a 1/8" aluminum bar I used to make a new nut). That third one is in "Resurrected" condition with new frets, nut, Ping Kluson style tuners and a Dano Pro bridge. The pickup, electronics, neck screws and rear cover are original and it's my favorite player.
