Incoming... admired for years - never played one - just bought one! '99 MIK Longhorn in classic tuxedo/noir.

1724827030321.jpeg

Those early Korean Longhorns are beauties. Congratulations.

They’re tough as nails , weigh nothing , sound great , and really are fun to play.
Arrived earlier today - spent a couple hrs going over it, cleaning/polishing, dressing the frets & fb, new strings and adjusting the bridge for intonation. The bass has been played with some fret-wear but it has a straight neck, low action and no buzzing. A couple little chips & scratches but in GC ATC overall. Owning a few Dano-made basses w/lipstick pu's - it kills sound/tone-wise. Than unmistakable nasally Dano tone - I just love it! Pu's are hot/sounds huge and tone-dialing with the stacked V/T pots offers a lot of tonal options/subtlety. Very pleased to have stumbled across this bass - can't wait to take it to rehearsals and play it live on stage! And 6lbs/3oz - I just love everything about it! Yah, this is going to a fun bass to play!

Does anyone here know if Danelectro made a HSC or gig-bag for a ss Longhorn? Either one would work - what do Longhorn owners use?
My Longhorn was used and came with a Roadrunner Deluxe Wood Electric case. Wood Electric Guitar Case | Road Runner RRDWE | Electric Guitar Case
Fits good, you just have to block off the horn tips as the body compartment is a little long. My folded up 3" strap does the job, but a 3" wide strip of 2" thick foam will make it perfect. These often go on sale for well under $100. The previous owner gigged this case all of the time, no issues.

However, when I got the Longhorn, I already had a generic case for my 1998 '56 U2 guitar. This is in addition to the original Dano 'tweed' gig bag the guitar came with. Found the case at a local 'used case' sale years ago, no markings or anything, but it seems to be a Chinese made case. It became the Longhorn case, as I like how it's built a little better-it's a little more sturdy. The Longhorn goes out to practices and gigs all of the time, the 56 U2 never leaves the house. Same deal, it needs that piece of foam for the Longhorn to be perfectly snug.

The U2 has a much longer body than the Longhorn and fit's nearly snug in the body compartment of either case, the folded up strap is all it needs to be snug. Both instruments are about the same total length (just under 40") and when the body compartment is blocked off properly, they both have an inch or two clearance from the top of the headstock to the edge of the case. Here's a pic of the instruments in either case. The Roadrunner is on the right.
That does it, I'm going to cut that piece of foam tomorrow night. It's just sitting in the garage, waiting...

 Thanks! The bass is 40" long so the HSC may not work. Which gig bag have you found to be ideal?

I picked up a leather Levy guitar gig bag on kijiji , it had never been used. The bag was worth more than the bass , but I managed to find it for a great price. For around fifteen years it was my primary gig bass , although these days I tend to use a big Gretsch hollow body.

JIO, that is a beauty. That's probably my favorite era of Longhorns and black is a great color for them. You're getting a # whether you want one or not. LOL

Oh by the way. I ended up buying a G&G baritone guitar case for my 63 short scale reissue and it fits perfectly. I'm not 100% sure it would fit a longhorn as well, but it might be worth looking into.

Thanks to all for tips on cases/gig-bags. I usually go for gig-bags as it can be shouldered while freeing both hands loading/unloading at gigs but a HSC is always good too. I found this $39.99 [free shipping] guitar gb on Amazon and judging by the measurements it might work. The LH is 40"x13" so it should fit snug.

UPDATE: Got the gig-bag just now - fits perfectly, checks all the boxes as a product for the price. However.., as much as it was nice getting it one day after ordering it - it confirms why I don't use Amazon. I wasn't a member but joined for free (for 30 days) to keep the cost down + free one-day shipping. (compared to Wednesday) I wanted to bring the Longhorn to rehearsal Tues night, so that prompted joining. FTR I do not want to support Jeff Bezos in any way, shape or form, so I was planning on dropping my $14+ a month subscription as soon as the gb arrived, and now I have a good reason. Doing the ordering, there was a section for "special instructions". I live in the he Mission SF, and have had porch-pirates steal packages off my porch. Valuable packages (thanks FedEx - another company I don't support/use) and Amazon is no different. My "special instructions" were simple; don't leave unattended. On top of that - I have/made a lock-box that the small package would have easily fit it*, with obvious instructions on how to use on the lid ... AND a note on my door stating "Deliveries: I am home- please knock - ring bell". No knock, no bell.

*I designed/built the lock-box (anchored to the wall) to fit a boxed guitar body, as I often have gilded Gildaxe bodies finished by Pat Wilkins in SoCal shipped to me. One was stollen delivered by FedEx - sig upon arrival. The driver left it unattended on my porch and forged my signature.

We have a Pomeranian and she always lets us know if someone is at the door. She began barking and once I opened the door, the deliverer was already back to his truck across the street - and this pic (provided by Amazon via email) tells the story. Sooo, if I wasn't home, someone walking by could have casually climbed our stairs and removed the box - in my urban neighborhood, no-one would have batted an eye.

Sorry for the rant - never again will I use f-ing Jeff Bezos's Amazon. I hope you are lucky not to have experienced such blatant disregard for people who use their business service.

I can see how that's frustrating! I have almost the opposite problem.
I have a bass coming into my friends place in Point Robert's. Knowing he is rarely home and there is almost zero chance it would get stolen, I want it dropped on his porch - no signature required.
I told the Reverb seller that, he said Reverb policy always requires a signature, but I can change it with UPS. So I had to create an account on Reverb and after a good 20 minutes trying to find how to change the delivery, I finally somehow stumbled into the right screen and "released it"
But everything I get a tracking notification, it says signature required...so will it actually get delivered? UPS makes me crazy!

I do use UPS (and USPS) always insured and always 'sig upon arrival' and haven't had an issue like with FedEx and now Amazon. Only once was there a damaged delivery w/UPS and it was efficiently resolved. Point being - out of the shipping options, UPS & USPS treat their employees better and do the most to be responsible. I have a face-to-face relationship with my postman, and UPS would never do what FedEx or Amazon would do, at least in my experience shipping basses/guitars etc for the past 10+ years with them.

Your case is unusual but understandable as they don't want to be held liable if it was stollen. Unfortunately their policy is based on the reality of our current world of desperate thieves.

Most of what I buy is from Sweetwater. I ordered a set of DR Hi Beams for the Thunderbird Shorty. They shipped USPS which was a first from them to the best I can recall. Usually everything is FedEx from them.

Pat Wilkins has sworn off Fed-Ex to a large percent due to their lack of responsible biz practices. It's difficult because they have established themselves as "the shippers of pro-biz's", but he has had numerous issues with them over the years and you can imagine how often he ships.

As a side note, I fully support USPS and labor unions in general.
