Danelectro Owners Club

Thanks for the reality check Dan-O!! Time to shell out some cash, right now it's mostly Longhorns on the markey, a few Hodads, occasionally a Rumor used. The DC's are ridiculously expensive, I can live without.
My back will thanks me, and I really DO like the Danelectro tone.
Good luck! And if you do happen to find say 2 longhorns on the cheap... ;)

That's very interesting! I did not know they were built different from other Danos (ie most Danos are hollow with a block under the bridge) - I am suprized by the fact that they've never reissued these given they do seem to have the most demand out there relative to supply.

ALSO - re "upwards pressure" you are mostly right - there in theory should be NO upward pressure. However, the lateral pressure on the bridge from string tension (the screws go into recesses on the bottom - that's what keeps it from twisting) provides upward pressure in two ways - one by pulling sideways the screws need to "come up" to follow the tension, secondly, because of that lateral tension the screws can get "locked in" effectively to the bridge and thus if one gets overzealous tightening the bridge down (these 63s seem to need the bridge VERY low) you could end up with the screw pulling up on the wood rather than down into the wood - especially with the crap wood they used in these.

Yeah, when setting up my bass each time, I found the same thing: The bridge needs to be very close to the body. It's fine because it gets you to a place where the bass is quite playable. Although it does not necessarily leave much room to adjust if needed. But I haven't needed to worry about that. It's been fine in this regard.

Yes, they do. The center block in there runs the length of the body, and mostly goes right up against the Masonite. It ties the top and bottom of the bass together, in an attempt to control feedback; making these DCs semi-hollow body basses. The only places where the block is not up against the top (that I can see without mirrors and stuff) are under the 2 front bridge screws. and under the pickups. No, I doubt the screws are the way they are to protect the Masonite. That's just a side effect. Above a certain diameter and length, that's just how this kind of wood screw is.:)

Interesting. Thanks. With all the stability problems that I am having, I guess it could be worse if that block was shorter (e.g., just under the bridge). Maybe the support of the block on the masonite (or the other way around) has helped keep my bass workable. And yeah, you're right about them just being regular wood screws, I guess. :)

He's referring to the DCs - to my knowledge the 63s are built like traditional Danos which is just a block under the bridge - based on a quick look I had when I got mine that seems to be the case.

[whispering] ah Ok sorry shhh OK [/whispering]
Snagged it for 432 + ship, close to what I wanted to spend. There's a decent looking Hodad up in a few days in case anyone's looking for one. If no one else on TB is GASsing for a Hodad, I'm gonna take a swing if it doesn't get bid up. Nice little number.
I s/w the seller and he will consider a case at additional $$. It's going to be a lot of fun playing a DC, one of my old band mates had a pretty good 1960's model, bet he still has it.

I think 60s DC basses were all short scale, so quite a different animal. In fact, they were the same size as a DC guitar, but with the bridge right at the tail, and of course frets further apart.

Congratulations on the win!

I watch most Dano bass auctions under $500 just for fun. That one Hodad is tempting, but I'll leave it alone. One of these days I'll jump on a short-scale Hodad when I see a cheap one and I'm in the right mood.

There's another '90s Hodad on there that's over-priced (stickers, collapsed bridge--though otherwise it doesn't look bad).

Window shopping.

Nice score!
So, I guess never mind what I said before. :D

Mind you, I only paid $180 w/ HSC for mine ;)
Did I mention I hate you? ;)
Between that, and my newly acquired G&L L2000 Tribute, I think I'll be set.
Yeah, with that particular combo you'd have all your bases (and basses) covered. Nice - two of my 3 faves (third being the almighty P - and the 200 will do a pretty passable "P" tone if you want it to) - my G&L is the American, but it's the 1505 (one - bridge - pickup) version - I love it, but I wish I had the 2000 or 2005.
