Danelectro Owners Club

Just got my DC silver sparkle. Those red knobs look amazing. The bass was sold as mint, and mints it is! Mike from Mike's Guitars was a real prince to deal with, sells on Reverb. Any recommendations for strings (I always play with Rotosound Swing Bass) but I realize that what I use on Fender and Ricks won't necessarily work on a Danelectro, seems like a light gauge is in order, and I will appreciate tried and true advice.

I find that I use the same strings on every bass - then the difference between them is the bass. Or, at least start with what you know and then select strings which enhance the differences you like and reduce the ones you don't! :)
For the record - the "famous" Danelectro sounds of the sixties were thin, zingy roundwounds - so the Rotosounds would be right up that alley.
Of course, LOTS of people love the with flats - but since you're getting one for flats one for RW - goi with what you know - no reason to change gauge if you like them - the Dano is QUITE happy with full gauge strings and has a pretty "thin" sound to begin with so I don't know it needs any more bass reduction/treble enhancement relative to your other basses.

I go for that early John Entwhistle type of sound, like piano strings, I thought tape wounds were more of a sound for something like Motown, but I really haven't tried them, are yo saying these would give me the twaaaaang I desire?

Just my buck-and-a-half. (Is that even as much as 2 cents was when the saying was coined?)

See my other post but if you like Entwistle's sound - He liked the Danos SPECIFICALLY for the thin roundwound strings they had - the story (others know it better than me) goes that he couldn't find the same strings anywhere so he'd just buy a new Longhorn when he broke a string. Eventually (while trying to record the solo in My Generation) he broke so many he gave in and ended up recording with his Jazz with flats - but the sound he was going for - and ended up with in time - was skinny roundwounds. And I'd say to my ears he got a pretty roundwound sound on that recording - he must have been changing strings after every take (also apparently the roundwounds of the time were constructed differently than they are now and were more flexible and thus more "zingy") That's why John and Jack Cassidy and Jack Bruce and Phil Lesh who were all known for their zingy sound on flat eventually went round.

Thanks, Danosix! Rotos have always worked for me.I think at least half of a player's tone comes from technique anyway. I have a new set of 45-105 handy, but I think I'll try the 40-100s on the DC first.

Welcome to the cult... er I mean club. And P.S. I'm very jealous - I totally miss my long horn (as great as my 63 is) and to get one used and beat (they look really cool worn and I'd never deliberately "relic" a guitar) for cheap just makes me green - and yes they are surprisingly hard to come by when you're looking.

A pic from my last gig. I'm loving my Longhorn more and more :-)

It has it's own voice, and I like that, especially with a pick and palm muting.

Totally - that's what originally attracted me to Danos - I loved the old "Tic Tac" bass on 60s country and pop recordings and that's how they did it (actually - apparently with a permanently installed piece of foam, but I like being able to play it "full voice" too.
Just thinking about it I can hear Patsy Cline "Walkin'" in my head.

While it's not technically mine yet, here's my dad's old Dano that's been in my possession for a few months now. Someone pulled it out of a dumpster and brought it to the pawn shop where my dad picked it up for $100. It looks like crap, but plays and sounds like a dream.

Some SERIOUS mojo on that baby. And for $100, darn, that's a deal and you have a real piece of music history.
Nice score.
