Danelectro Owners Club

True. And I badly wanted one of those once upon a time. The question is whether the Hondo would sound close enough to a Danelectro, if the Dano sound was what one was after.
Those I've seen have a Dimarzio style P pickup. They're aren't even close to the sound. Plus its in the wrong spot so swapping in lipstick probably wouldn't help. They look good though.

I bought a couple of things from Ft. Madison a few years ago. The guy seems committed to the brand but does not sell his stuff cheaply.

As to a long-scale Longhorn, unless you are dead set on a 100% factory spec look, this is easily achievable.

1) Get yourself a Longhorn body.
2) Get a long-scale bass neck, Dano or otherwise.
3) If the neck heel is too narrow for the pocket (unlikely), build up the sides with shims. If the neck heel is too wide, rough the sides of the heel down with a drum sanding bit on a Dremel tool. Sand and scrape to finished dimensions.
4) Since the bridge has to be moved forward, you have space at the body butt for a short trapeze tailpiece.
5) Obtain a suitable bridge. Probably this will have to be a floating type, both for intonated positioning and because there will be no internal anchor block to screw into. The neck may have to be shimmed for comfortable action.
6) String up.
7) Tune up.
8) Play.
The neck pocket is far to close to the bridge (and the tailpin end) to accommodate any non-custom neck.
I let it go when the other person said move the bridge forward, because it was a simple mistake, but the bridge would need to be moved BACK - away from the current neck pocket location - and there's nowhere to go.
You have to either build custom from the start or get someone to build you a custom neck with a fret board that goes to (approximately, I didnt' want to do the math) the 30th fret (or has a bunch of "blank" past whichever fret you stop at).
You really need to pick between a longhorn (if the look is the main thing for you) OR longscale. If you get one of the other hollow models like the 63 or the Hodad - you have an instrument that is constructed exactly like the Longhorn with the same pickups in a very similar position so it will sound very similar OR go full custom - I'm sure Moonshine could do it for you.

Sorry, but the only honest answer is - keep looking.
It took me the better part of a decade (along with not having money at right time several times), but they're out there.
One of the problems is this is a less common colour than the black, and the longhorn being a kindof eccentric/retro design, the people that have 'em in "keen green" (that's the DAnelctro name for that colour - seafoam is the Ducco/Fender name for it) or green burst tend to keep 'em.
Look on Reverb - I've seen a number any time I was on a serious search - and evilBay - they were always just too far from me (I'm in Canada, so almost everyting on Reverb is too far).

Thanks! Somehow, someway, I found one! Yes!!!!!

If you don't mind my asking, where'd you find it? I've been kinda watching, looking for someone with a fairly late model Longhorn (pretty much any color) they've decided to dump for around $250-ish or less. I figure if I keep my eyes open sooner or later one will pop up. Anyone here sees one and doesn't jump on it first, if you'd ping me with info I'd sincerely appreciate it.

Was thrilled when I saw this post so I ordered an SG case from a website that I know does quality cases. It wasn't an Epiphone case, however, and to cut a long story short, it didn't fit. The website was really cool, however, and I got a full refund.

Still looking for a case for my longhorn! Really want a contoured hard one like that. :(

I think it has to be an Epiphone case for it to fit, unfortunately. I bought a Gator case and it didn't fit either.

Luckily I can just swap cases with my guitarist.

I was Googling everything known to man. Found an old Craigslist archived post from 2+ years ago. Happened to be about 100 miles away. Seafoam Dano. Great condition. The guy never sold it and wasn't really looking to sell it but said he was down to since he had 10 basses and needed some ca$h. Meeting him tonight - so I will post when it's a done deal. Hope it works out!

Dano Club -

I just went through all 60 pages of this thread. Yeah, I have a life. Anyways, I saw most of the usual suspect colors - however, I only saw ONE Purpleburst. Was this an actual run, or custom? I had never seen one before and it blew my brain wide open. So sexy. Anyways, just curious! I have owned 3 danos (one DC and two longhorns) and I always like grabbing new color combos. Can anyone tell me about this one or show me any photos of other rare Danos (preferably longhorn basses).

Yeah the purple burst were part of the first run of the "pro" models - adjustable bridge, better tuners, needless to say they are VERY rare. I got the green burst I always wanted, but I'd LOVE one of those or the almost as rare blue burst as a "spare".

So are brand new upgraded PRO models not available? If I were going to buy one brand new I think that would be my preference.

I don't think the Pro version is currently available new other than possibly NOS. I have a dark blue sparkle Longhorn Pro I bought used several years ago. For the last couple of years I've been thinking of letting go but each time I play it, I decide to keep it.

I've been looking, hoping to come across one at some point. Kinda hate to just go buy a brand new one when I know that sooner or later a used one is gonna pop up at a decent enough price that it would be worth upgrading with better tuners and bridge. If I could find a NOS Pro model that would be good too, I've been digging around and they just don't seem to be out there. Didn't ask the guy at Fort Madison Guitars about that though, might be worth another phone call. Although he did tell me to wait until the end of the year if I were going to buy one, I think on the assumption that they'll take over the company and things will be changing after they do. The money really isn't the issue for me, it's about the VALUE for $$$ spent especially since these are such odd duck basses anyway. I just really want one.
