D'Angelo & The Vanguard (but no Pino, Gah!)

Saw a great set from D'Angelo Sunday night at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. Fantastic performance, fantastic band, Chris "Daddy" Dave on drums. I spent a pretty penny on the tickets and was hoping for some heavy improv between Chris Dave and Pino. The seats were pretty far back. The bassist comes out. He's a fairly tall white guy, but he's playing a Jazz bass. Then he switches to another Jazz bass. He's got more hair than Pino, but he sort of moves like Pino. My friend and I are confused. Is it him? The playing is pretty straight (which you would expect). The set list is below and that fact that Chicken Grease was omitted should have tipped me off. I scoured the internet for rumors, pictures. Just found this. I was right. But so what. It was a hell of a show and I have newfound respect for D'Angelo for his songwriting, performance, and putting together a hell of a band. Whoever this guy is, he did a great job.

Yes, it's Pino's son Rocco. Pino had gig with The Who so his son replaced him for few gigs.

He did - James Jr. had a pretty good career going many years ago, but I don't think he's as active in high-profile circles as he used to be.

james jr still gigs a lot in detroit. plays with fellow motown legend dennis coffey weekly.
