Darkglass Anagram Multi FX Announced

I had the same thought, but then remembered that the QC uses these interesting footswitches that double as the control pots/knobs for the parameters in each DSP block. I'm not sure how a Barefoot Button or similar would impede the use of these footswitch pots. It would probably be fine, but some caution might be warranted given how unique they are.
Mooer tops work on QCm. I imagine others will as well. Been messing around a bit and no issues with fit or slippage when twisting.

Also, just got an MC6 Pro, and wanting to set it up as just plain stomps/quicknobs, but I want access to more than 6. I only know how to assign MIDI CCs to quick knobs, but there are only 6 in the manual. It seems like I should be able to control more than 6.

Am I missing something? Should I be able to toggle a block off and on with any (supported) CC command?
Current MIDI functionality doesn’t include assigning CC commands directly to blocks.

So you can assign CC commands to each of the 6 quick knobs and each of the 3 footswitches (in stomp mode). Then you have a total of 9 CC commands and you can bind blocks to those quick knobs/footswitches to toggle them on and off with CC commands. You can also bind multiple blocks (create a macro) with any of the quick knobs and footswitches. So there’s a decent amount of flexibility.

Playing around on these today. So far, QCm is reaffirming for me how much better the Anagram is for bass, and it’s not even close 🤘🏻 but they are both sick, portable units

Curious what your reasoning is? I was on the fence about the Anagram, love the cadence of releases and cool that its bass-centric but haven’t been wowed by demos. The capture process is obviously far less refined than on the QC/Nano.

The QC was probably the best sound I’ve had, certainly comparable to my current pedalboard. My issues were he size and the v1 captures didn’t quite do my preamp justice, I’m very confident the v2 captures will do wonders though.

As it stands, despite the price difference, the QCm has me the most excited and seems like everything I loved plus the few gripes resolved.

Leaning heavily to the QC but always willing to have my mind swayed.

I imagine it’ll be different strokes for different folks. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. I’m probably gonna beat a dead horse here, but anyway…

For me, I don’t use captures very often. I prefer configurable amp sims, plugins, and effects blocks for my workflow, such as for parameter changes between scenes.

If you build your sound around captures, both will be excellent but the QCm has the slight advantage of being able to do it directly on the device.

Where the Anagram is especially strong for bass is the number and quality of bass-specific gear choices: amp sims, distortions, cabs and IRs, etc. Made by bassists for bassists. And they’re largely dialed in with a great sound by default. As these are what I primarily use in my presets, this reigns king for me.

Anagram gives you what you need for bass and none of the fluff you don’t, like guitar-centric stuff or a rather lame choice of amp/cab sims, IMO, even given the already extremely low number available on QCm. It’s almost like NDSP chose the amps and cabs based on what a guitarist might think a bassist would want rather than directly from a bassist. 🤷‍♂️

If you double on guitar, QCm is definitely the winner, but this is talkbass, not talkguitar 🙃 I dabble so will be using some of those features occasionally, and primarily the NDSP plugins I like to use.

Having Parallax is also VERY nice, especially if you record with it and want your studio sound live exactly as it is on the record.

I can definitely see where one might choose one over the other. I’m lucky enough to be able to keep and enjoy both. 🙂 And I’ll be A/Bing them in the band context over the next weeks as well. Who knows what might change? 😊

The V2 capture technology is intriguing. Replicating my analog board is something I kinda wanted to do with the Anagram but then realized it’s more of its own thing with its own flavors. The NAM captures I’ve done are just ok but not close to the level of what I hear from the QC and it’s doing it all on its own without having to reamp or double track record.

So if you’re not looking to recreate an existing analog setup, and especially if you lean Darkglass, then definitely Anagram is the winner for all its bass specific options.

But….if you have a specific analog setup you want to condense down to 9x5 inches for gigs then QC mini is the winner.

Absolutely! The QCm would really shine in that case 🙂

Good to know and kinda seals the deal for me.

While I do find some of the Anagrams effects intriguing like the Doom2 clone and stuff, they’d be more a novelty for me.

I’ve always been pretty underwhelmed by bass oriented drives I’ve tried so that’s not a huge sell for me, particularly the DG stuff. I really want to have solid captures of my EAE pedals which I love and stuff like the Rusty Box and Sunn Model T, all of which I need captures for.

I absolutely loved the QC Hiwatt model but other than that wasn’t blown away. An Orange AD200 would be a great addition but I’d probably still end up back on my captures.

Anagram looks decent and it’s exciting to see where they’re going, I know I’ll be envious of the crazy number of effects dropping on a regular basis while I’m sat waiting on quarterly releases (if I’m lucky).

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts after trying in a band context!

You should, just like you can on devices by Line 6, Hotone, etc.... but you can't.
The day they released the first round of MIDI features, that was my immediate feedback.

Per @Grahams Groove reply to the question, you can use the bindings, essentially an abstraction layer that provides pros (flexibility) and cons (unnecessary complexity if you don't need the flexibility offered) but that still creates a lot of work to do each time for something that could be much simpler in many situations.

I've captured this as a Wish list item here to please do vote it up - MIDI Controller assignments for each slot in a Preset

Speaking of updates dropping on a “regular basis”, DG and NDSP just have different release cadences.

While DG is dropping small updates frequently (~2 weeks), they tend to be small. A few new devices and some bug fixes, OR a platform update.

When NDSP drops their updates every 2-3 months, they tend to be far larger. Numerous additional devices, platform changes, many bug fixes, etc.

In the end, it equals out to about the same.

However, where the biggest difference lies with us bass players is that nearly all of the updates in the Anagram are bass focused while the QC has had almost zero bass-specific updates since launch 4+ years ago (with a couple exceptions including the Parallax plugin). Seriously, look at the QC’s device list and which version the bass amps/cabs were released. Almost all v1.0.0. I know it’s just business, supply and demand, but it still comes across as insulting.

Just wanted to keep things in perspective.

I want full midi functionality on the Anagram, and I assume we'll get it. That said, it's 6 of one and a half dozen of the other. With the current binding/quick knob setup, you can essentially create copies of a preset in your midi controller, so the same buttons send the same CC commands to the same quick knobs. Then you just have to change which blocks are bound to the quick knobs for each preset. If they give us functionality where each block is assigned a CC number, you'll then need to update the CC commands sent by each footswitch on your controller for each preset based on the blocks you want to toggle. I honestly thing looking up and programming unique block CC commands in every preset would be slower than quickly changing quick knob bindings on the anagram itself. Maybe there's another solution, but you'll always have the step of changing either bindings or CC commands.

Whoa, European invasion on my board right now:
IMG_5486.jpeg

Was doing some shootouts, and realized every pedal on my board is from Europe. Boss I guess is Asian, so it counts at least being international. And the pedal board is Rockboard, by Warwick Germany, and power supply is Cioks which is Danish, the only thing American on my board is the 3m dual lock and patch cables, but some are EBS some are Ernie Ball.

Got plenty of American and Canadian on other boards though:

Really like the Anagrams effects. Finally dialed in a phaser I like, and the chorus is serviceable, delay and reverb decent. All of it is as good as any normal no thrills Boss pedal. Going to be nice not having so many points of failure on a gigging board.

The Anagram is in the loop of the Caveman so I can bypass it and go completely analog if I want/need to. I feel like I have more possibilities with the Anagram than I ever did on any board with pedals. I have a MC6 Pro I'm going to slap on it too, the only thing holding it back is MORE MIDI!!!

I remember thinking the same when the anagram was released. I had a QC for a small period of time and didn’t really gel with it but absolutely love my Anagram.

Not scrolling through hundreds of amps not meant for you is a surprisingly big thing.

My suggestion would be fully configurability. It is basically an idea of realising single stomps via Midi. No complex binding.

The current CC messages would stay the same of course. But the remaining messages or the ones that are not booked yet could be fully up to the user.
Users would be able to choose from possibly way more options than there are midi messages. (Maybe it could even go through different midi channels and then you can pretty much assign every parameter.)

-You could assign each block in a chain to a midi message.
-you could have specific blocks assigned to a specific message (e.g. Alpha Omicron on off always on CC 127 or, even more granular, bite on off always on 126).

I think I'll work out an overview later that makes it a bit more understandable.

The Caveman! I can't test one, but am very intrigued. Is the sound as amazing as they say? Better than other good preamps with more controls?

Still, the Anagram is at the top of my list, even compared to the slew of new modelers coming out. The bass amp selection is awesome in the Anagram.

Congrats on the purchase, it looks really cool!
How long does this small QC take to boot? Is it the same as the big one, over 70 seconds? Or does it have more powerful hardware? The power requirements seem quite different.

I was curious myself and timed it in default state and again after restoring from backup.

Default state boot time test: 60 seconds
Restored state boot time test: 49 seconds

Boot time might vary by user and stored state but that’s what I get. It’s consistent too.

Faster than the QC was for me but not a patch on the Anagram
