Darkglass Anagram Multi FX Announced

well, I kind of respectfully disagree. The manufacturer puts presets on the device that represent what they think users want. And, Darkglass being Darkglass, they put a lot of those types of grindy/heavy type of presets in there because that's a lot of what Darkglass is about as reflected by their tone shaping and distortion pedals.

IMO, the presets are not simply a capability statement, I suspect may users will go through the factory presets and choose a handful that appeal to them, or fit the music they play, and then tweak them as they like. But I think there will be plenty of users who just pick factory presets and not do much to them .... not every player wants to dive deeply into these very deep tech devices.

I think the experiences that players are reflecting on the MXR Bass Synth pedal is representative of this. If you read the Gigging With the MXR Bass Synth thread, you will see that there are players who dive deeply into the many tweakable options on the pedal, and there are also plenty of players who just use the presets.

Anyway, it's just my opinion, so it's hardly worth debating too much.

Aside from the factory presets inside the Anagram and the presets I make for the videos, we don’t put anything up on the Darkglass Suite.

All other presets on the cloud are from the community :)

Amp/cab wise what’s everyone liking? I use the Super California head but cab wise I’ve been switching between the Berg Vintage Peggy and the Orange 115. I can’t seem to land on one.
Different cabs for different situations/tones. Luckily we don’t have to carry them around 😂

Personally, i really like the Peggy Vintage 8x10, Peggy 1x15, DG 1x12, Fruity 1x15, Fruity 8x10, Nolly Vintage, Nolly Megameld.

If you’re open to buying some

Are absolutely fantastic

I like the Darkglass 212. As far as amps, the swirl 900. I had a SWR 900 that I toured with back in the 90s, so maybe it’s nostalgia, but to my ear it sounds/responds very similarly to the real thing.

I’ve been using the Jim Bass combined with the Super California cab since getting mine last autumn. This was the closest I could dial in close enough to my Helix tone (SVT Brt with a blend of ampeg 8x10 and grammatico 1x12) fairly quickly to start gigging with it straight away and slot into the same frequency space in my band. FWIW, I tried the Peggy amp and Peggy cabs and didn’t take to them.

I haven’t really done anything with the presets since. I was busy gigging up until the end of the year so I didn’t want to mess with anything. And full disclosure, I haven’t touched it since then due to taking a break from gigging for cancer treatment.

It has however been on my mind, and I’ve been rethinking my approach. I’m considering abandoning amp and cab models in favour of DI models with eq (and maybe a cab lightly blended in for a little colour). Being inspired my Ian Alison, and Chris Horrocks (aka That Guy On Bass), rather than chasing ‘amp in the room’ tone that I’ll never achieve in a pub/wedding band environment going direct to PA, why not build a solid DI tone instead? It’ll give me a more authentic and predictable direct to PA response, and solid foundation to build upon. Not to mention, one thing I notice about the Anagram’s drives and distortions compared to the Helix, is they behave much better in the top end without requiring cabs or eq to stop them sounding fizzy.

The SWE is my new Go To Amp. Before that it was the swirl. And Sometimes I Go Ampless just with the Harmonic Booster and Noble.
As I really dislike the Cabs (they all Sound Like an Open Wah Pedal) I use a IR - Shiftline Mesa 215
It’s been said before, but the Shiftline cab IRs are phenomenal (and free to download). There are a few I like and occasionally use from the Anagram cab options, but the Shiftline are my favorites.

The Shiftline HD Bass IR pack has this EVM 12” guitar (maybe?) speaker. The 500ms C version blended 50/50 with a DI is just stunning.

got it. I was referring mostly to the factory presets. Not a serious criticism of the Anagram really as I'm sure most, if not all, of the current crop of serious multi-FX/modeler boxes on the market today need to provide a pretty wide range of built in sounds. And many of those will probably not apply to every player .... like those grinds/heavy type tones that I referred to from that video of The Warning and their bass player using an Anagram.

I also totally get that while it does not fit my needs at all, there is clearly a player market for those kinds of tones as reflected by that style of music ... like The Warning, Wet Leg, Halestorm, Wolf Alice and many others in that musical universe. After all, those are the bands playing Lollapalooza, Outside Lands etc. ... and I ... am not ;)

I get a lot of mileage out of the SWE TC650 head these days as I mostly play clean, and I quite like the DG212 to go with it. Jazz fusion and funk.

On a recent Jazz standards recording session, I went with a simple setup of a P with flatwounds through the Gentle (HPF engaged) and an artist cab (Forrester clear), that was pretty cool too. Nailed that old school vibe for the tunes we played.

I'm currently toying with the idea of loading an IR of a Traynor YBA 200 into the 'gram, there's one on tone3000. Got an old YBA 200 in my bedroom that will most likely never see stage usage again, but I quite like the tone.

Amp/cab wise what’s everyone liking?...
I'm finding that I’m like Mikey with this stuff

Although I’ll have moments or phases where I *really* like one thing or another and felt most strongly pulled toward and back and forth between the SWIRL-900 and the Peggy...and the Tiny Lark...and the Terror Bass...and the...honestly, I find things to like about everything.

Going into this, I was extremely psyched about the capability to do splits and send cab sims to FOH and bypass to an amp for the times I have one on stage, which is a sometimes thing for me. But after some real-world use ampless and not, my conclusion is that, for me, there just isn’t much practical benefit to using cabs. This is mostly a *feel* thing (I can't actually hear myself in real-time out front and on stage), but I’ve come to see cab sims as essentially just another layer of EQ (albeit a complex and very detailed one) on a mountain of EQ choices that are already there. The way I calculate it, by the time everything’s said and done and FOH has had its way with the sound, taking it from something I dialed in on at my desk on headphones to a full band mix in whatever room, it’s no longer what I originally worked up anyway. At that point, the marginal differences don’t seem to make much difference to the end result.

Plus, I find that when I toggle them on and off and compare, I often end up preferring the sound with the cab sims off, both in my IEMs and in headphones when I’m playing along with tracks or practicing solo.

But bottom line for me is that I’m a weekend cover band player. My main concern is the live band mix and FOH sound, not recording or creating music where I might want to control what end up being minute details (lost) in a live mix.

One thing that drove this home was dialing in an a-ha Take On Me sound with some help. I got a great starting point from a preset and I tweaked and tweaked while playing along with a bassless track before taking it out to a gig. That first show was ampless, and there was a cell phone video. Listening back, the result pretty much just sounded like...a bass...with dead strings.

Different use cases are different use cases. For me, I may eventually come across something that pulls me back in the cab direction, but for now and for my use, they’re not really a net positive.

I've gone back and forth with this, depending on use-case. I find that a ~50/50 blend of the cab sim delivers the goods...

Any word of Darkglass developing a mobile (Android or ios) version of the Darkglass Suite? Some sort of mobile integration seem almost like a necessity these days.
The official Darkglass response is "A dedicated app/editor for the Anagram is on the roadmap, but we cannot confirm a set timeline for it, yet."

Not sure if Ivan is able to specifically expand on whether that is just Windows/macOS or also includes Android/iOS at this time, or if we just have to bide our time and be patient (which we're all bad at)...? :)

hey Anagramers, I had a realization during this weekends gigs. I REALLY like the sound of my physical rig and pedal board, and am now wondering if I can get the same from my Anagram. Given what's available on the Anagram for Amps and Cabs, I'm guessing it will take a NAM capture or two, and an IR or 2.

So, my signal chain is:

Bass (J basses run passive) => Pedalboard (Cali76 => VT => Noble) Noble DI out goes to house, Noble 1/4 goes to my amp/cab, which is WD-800 into A Subway 1x15, with a Berg CN112 on top for certain bigger, or outdoor gigs.

So, any idea where I can get a clean WD800 NAM capture with minimal EQ, and damping set on Medium. And where can I get an IR of the Subway 1x15 and either a Berg CN112 or Subway 1x12 ?

Having asked that, let me say that I have been able to get solid working sounds from the Anagram factory options and a few of the NAMs available on Tone3000. I have also found what seem like IRs for the Subway cabs, but I have not worked out how to use them on Anagram (just have not figured it out).

As I tried to use the Midi Switch in rehearsal yesterday and struggled so hard with the LEDs and the bug of double stomp on the switches from time to time...
I coded myself Midi Commands.
It can´t be so hard?
