Darkglass Anagram Multi FX Announced

I haven’t read through all the responses (read: complaints) but how is what Darkglass doing any different than what
Line 6, Neural DSP or IK Multimedia doing with regards to offering additional addons available for purchase for those that want them? do people complain about buying IRs? Kemper profiles? they’ve made it abundantly clear that the unit itself will be receiving substantial, free upgrades as part of what the Anagram offers. what am I missing here?

I don't even own an Anagram anymore and I think the whining is ridiculous. If you want to complain, it should be about how the Marketplace took precedence over something like an actual desktop/mobile editor. I still can't believe this hasn't come out (I know they're working on it, but it should have been a priority within 6 months).

yeah, coming from a Helix I find the “editor” quite a bit… lacking. still I have faith that they’ll come out with something worthwhile to reward our patience. I am surprised though that they didn’t have one ready to go at product launch.

Exactly. And I still follow the development from afar because they do a stellar job of updating the unit. I just think their priorities are out of whack somewhat. Like you said, this is something that should have been ready day one. It wasn't, so maybe 3 months in. Well, how about a year later? Still not? Yikes.

Loaded the Bass Knob and the Bass Hammer, along with a pitch block (for 1/2 down) a gain block (at the end- which wasn’t doing anything, but is on just in case) and a FET compressor block.

It gave me a low resource warning that popped up.
Uh….seriously? That’s less than encouraging…….
Literally nothing more than I listed above and it’s running out of horsepower???

That is a bit concerning. I would hope that there are some guidelines for developers indicating how much DSP they can use for a block vrs a plugin. It would be unfortunate to buy an expensive block or plugin only to find that it is poorly optimized or a resource hog....

I don't know if my ignorance is betraying me, but watching Bass Fox's video testing the different blocks recently added to the Marketplace, I noticed that when he talks about how the bass sound improves when he activates a block, the output meter doesn't match the on/off indicator... I don't know if I'm explaining myself well? Of course it sounds better when he activates them, but isn't it just the effect that it seems to sound better at higher volumes?

Tbh i really enjoy pirkko chorus.
Same. I'm not searching for anything in my sounds that generally isn't covered by the blocks we currently have, but the Mint Chocolate Chorus from Darkglass that I need to kick in from time to time just didn't do it for me, no matter how much I tweaked the settings.

The free Pirkko Chorus Deluxe plugin (Anagram Marketplace) was just the difference in Chorus sound I was looking for. I think it is largely due to the X-Over parameter to keep the lower frequencies cleaner. For me, this makes is much more usable for the commercial pop/rock songs I'm performing where I'm just changing Scenes for a Middle 8 or Interlude to kick in a Chorus.

While I haven't made time to try it, I suspect this will also pair with an Octaver block nicely for the same reasons.

As I read through many of the plugin descriptions, and looked over the screenshot of the parameters available, I was a little surprised at how many of the Amp plugins were essentially "pretty" NAM and IR loaders, sometimes with a few parameters. Now, let me be clear - there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But, knowing that the NAMs are often the resource hogs, I think many people might be a little surprised and caught out if they don't appreciate that some of these plugins aren't blocks performing simulations (generally more efficient), but are loading NAMs and often NAMs + IRs, which will generally consume more resources.

The Bass Knob and the Bass Hammer do not specifically say in their descriptions whether they are using NAMs, and I'm definitely not trying to insinuate that they might be - I have no idea - and even if they are, that's totally fine. But, if they are, it may account for unexpectedly running out of DSP resources when using them with a couple of DG blocks.

They are both might be more complex than a single amp sim, especially the Bass Knob, since it advertises itself as a full pedalboard in a single knob.

Yeah, just wasn’t expecting to get that warning.
Probably the reason they are limiting to 3 NAM blocks as well.

Respectfully, this concerns me if it runs out of steam this early, because NAM blocks, plugins, and I would also imagine native blocks, are only going to get more resource demanding.

Man... get buried with life and work and come back to this!

I just want to call out that Ivan and the rest of the DG folks have been more than putting in the work and honestly knocking out some incredible things with such a small team. Some of us are fortunate enough to see things a little bit more behind the scenes and in my 20+ years of tech industry experience, I have seen nothing short of book worthy performance on what can be produced with a core group of people who really just want to share their love of gear and make some really rad stuff. They are listening to every concern and frustration and working through them all, a lot of times one on one with the people raising the issues as they are having them.

It's hard to believe that its only been a year, but the Anagram is used in the same breath of Line6, Fractal, NeuralDSP, and the other more established titans. Each update brings more polish, more shine, more features.

Is it perfect? Of course not. I also have plenty to complain about with my Helix, and probably the QC Mini that I've got coming. Am I going to try to put them all on the same pedal board in some sort of dystopian Rube Goldberg multi-effects monstrosity? Yes, but only for the sport of it... and I have good reasons... because reasons.... and no... I haven't ruled out the BOSS 500 series pedals either...

Point is, what they've done so far is pretty rad. Opening up the platform for independents to develop and sell their own plugins is a killer community move. They're bridging the gap and know where they want to be... which happens to be where we want them to be (more complete MIDI, a desktop editor experience, access to the launch codes, rock steady performance with old standby blocks and new features). I think that most people have clear eyes about where the product is, what it can be, and what they need.

San Dimas High School Football Rules! :D

EDIT: 2 betr wurds gud

Cautionary tale about buying an Anagram used.

First off, I don't think buying used is an unusual situation for bass players, particularly here on TB with its very active classifieds section and a pretty honest and trustworthy group of sellers/buyers. I am not a very prolific buyer/seller myself, but I definitely look to buy gear used before I drop my hard earned money on new stuff.

So, I bought a used Anagram from another TB member. It was a local sale and it was in cash and with the full package of stuff I got in the exchange, I felt it was a good deal. This particular Anagram had gone through 2 prior owners before me, and I knew that up front, but I didn't quite understand the registration issues I would ultimately face. Luckily for me both prior owner are also TB members. 👍

When I first started using the Anagram, the ownership issue was not serious, all the presets were there and I could download anything from the Darkglass presets. I tried to register the unit on the DarkGlass Suite/MyPedal page, but the original (first owner) had already registered it, and just overlooked de-registering it when it was sold to the second buyer, so I could not register. This was not an issue at all until the recent addition of the Anagram Marketplace. With that addition, I had to have a registered unit to participate in the Marketplace. Oops!

Now, DarkGlass makes de-registering the Anagram pretty easy really. There are two ways to do it; Transfer it to a new buyers email and the new owner gets an email to accept the unit and register it themselves. DarkGlass actually provides a Transfer button on the MyPedal page. Sellers can also just delete the Anagram from their MyPedal account and that should free up the unit serial number so a new owner can then register it for themselves. So all of this is pretty easy, BUT the seller must do it or the new owner is basically S.O.L.

I will also say that @IvanBassist and the DarkGlass Tech Support team were very responsive and willing to help me work through this issue, so all good there.

Long story short, I was able to get the original owner to transfer the Anagram to me. Cool. But anyone considering the purchase of a used Anagram should pay attention to this issue.

all's well that ends well phew!

With its display, the Anagram is so easy to use that I personally don't really miss having an editor (even though I love it on the H90, for example). I definitely prefer the marketplace.

This is Big Plugin at it again, forcing us to buy new devices and gathering all our personal details in the process.

But in all seriousness I knew @IvanBassist would get it fixed for you as soon as he stopped swinging weight in the gym
