Darkglass Anagram Multi FX Announced

I figured I’d share my experience with the Darkglass Anagram after using it during a gig this past weekend. We’re a four-piece band and played at a local brewery.
This was my second time using the Anagram and I'm getting used to it. It held up well throughout the show with minimal tweaks to my sound. I ran both a Spector Euro and a Sabre through a Mesa Subway stack (the 1x15 and 1x12 combo). My pedalboard setup was pretty straightforward: Anagram, a Shure wireless, and a 3 Leaf Audio Proton, all powered by a TrueTone CS6 (took a risk but yes, it can power them!)

In preparation, I dialed in 4-5 presets ahead of time, tailored to different sections of our set.
  • Hard Rock: For the 90s grunge tunes, I went with a compressor, fuzz, chorus, and a Neural Amp.
  • Americana: Mellow rock tones, inspired by IMA’s sig preset with a bit of grit, some chorus and octave
  • Chewy-ish: IMA replicated, for more synth-style sounds.
  • Slap: Built for the Chili Peppers stuff, but I chickened out and didn’t end up engaging it at all
Some scattered thoughts:

- The envelope filter didn’t quite give me that "quack" I was after, even with some overdrive in front. Thankfully, I had the 3 Leaf Proton in the loop.
- I tried both the HL and Limiter compressors but found it hard to tell how much effect they were having. I miss a gain reduction meter, or a blinking led, led or some sort of UI indicator.
- Touchscreen gestures still feel a bit clunky. Sometimes I just want to tap a block, but I end up entering 'drag' mode (when the screen turns purple). And scrolling up and down when using two parallel rows of blocks isn’t the smoothest experience either.
- Switching between presets and scenes during the set proved to be one of the more challenging parts. I kept forgetting I had to hold the right knob to toggle between Scene and Preset modes (don't use Stomp). Naturally had to switch presets in between songs, but kept forgetting to switch back to Scene, and those 2-3 seconds slow things down. I'm thinking I might need a dedicated button to really streamline things.
- Related to the above, foot navigation is something I’m still adjusting to. I’ve gotten used to pressing two footswitches to bank up or down (I wear size 10.5 shoes), but it’s not second nature yet. Adding the magnetic toppers from my stomp helped.
-It was a nice discovery that while inside the pedal config screen, you can toggle through scenes and see the differences at the knob level apply in real time. The Anagram intuitively stores these settings as you tweak scenes through and you need to click Save only once, as opposed to the stomp.
- Wish there was a latch mode. eg: We play “Black” by Pearl Jam, and I need a somehow pronounced chorus for one short lick in the verses, I missed being able to quickly toggle that effect on and off with a hold action. I had to switch scenes just to bring in the chorus, then switch back. Got exhausted and didn't do it in the second verse.
- On the bright side, we played “Sober,” and I was able to run the Proton in the loop with a Duality block and the Sublime octaver. That combo actually worked well for synthy sounds. BUUUT I did try integrating an expression pedal to control filter cutoff on the Mooger Fooger block, but didn’t get the result I hoped for. As i said, the built-in envelope filter still leaves a lot to be desired. I managed to assign expression control to the fuzz, octaver and some mellow delay, but since it can't affect the FX loop other than volume, didn’t really deliver the sound I was after (look for Sober byTool in Budapest on YT).
- One more note on gestures and interactions: I use 4 macros to configure parameters controlled by the EXP pedal and I find myself having to apply excessive speed and distance on my swipes across the horizontal screen to scroll through them. I'd probably adjust the velocity and touch slop thresholds to make the Anagram more sensitive to shorter and lighter swipes, cause it gets exhausting.

Still, this was only my second gig with the Anagram. I’m getting more comfortable with it each time, and I know that with more practice I’ll be faster at navigating it and setting up presets that follow our setlist more intuitively. I didn’t have to bend down this time, which felt like a win. That said, I ended up using my heel to turn some knobs.. oops.

TLDR; My wishlist:

  • Improved envelope filters with more character and sensitivity. Q control, Filter cut off.
  • Some sort of visual compressor meter
  • Phasers
  • Latch mode for momentary on/off toggling of effects. Maybe there is one and im missing it?
  • Smoother screen gestures for scrolling, tapping and dragging
  • Easier way to toggle between Scene and Preset modes
  • More footswitch functionality, or the option to assign more custom actions
  • I know its coming, but MIDI support, ideally with per-preset CC mappings. I'm itching for MIDI support to come to the Anagram, as my Future Impact IV is just sitting here on my desk, waiting to be integrated into the setup. eg: I want to be able to control Filter cut offs on Preset 1, and VCOs on Preset 2, with the same expression pedal' for example

There’s definitely room for sonic and functional growth, but overall I’m really enjoying the Anagram. The flexibility and ease of setting up blocks and routing on the fly is impressive, on the stomp, I could never. I’m genuinely excited to be an early adopter and see how the platform evolves. There's really nothing like it right now in the industry and it's exciting to help the platform evolve, with it's growing pains and all.

I'm guessing that's because it's still running through your default audio device. You'll have to make similar changes in the windows audio settings I think.
hum, not sure how. I already made sure Anagram is the default audio device for output and input in Windows settings. I can even make it do test "beeps" in the settings. But when it comes to applications like browsers playing sound, nothing comes out... they did say it's a beta release, so there might hopefully still be compatibility issues to iron out.

You'd do it here:
Right-click on the sound icon in the task bar:

Then find and set the Anagram as default and do the same on the recording tab.

But if it does send the test beeps to the anagram, I would assume it's set correctly. I guess it could be because it's still in beta, but it's something people may overlook to set properly. So I thought I'd suggest it before you start messing pointlessly with your windows sound or Anagram settings.

Much appreciated... But indeed, that's done already, Anagram is the default device, and the tests are emitting beeps... There must be an issue with the windows driver they've used... Let's wait for the next update and see...

I know this will be a long journey towards maturity.

USB audio seems to work well in Mac OS (M1 MacBook Air running Sequoia 15.5) out of the box. However, I found that lowering/raising headphones volume in the Anagram mixer doesn't actually affect it (I didn't realize before since I used an external interface). I haven't heard that from anyone here. Did I miss something?

On Mac the new update is also not working well. MY Preset Dashboard is empty and the Preset Hub does not really work (Preset trying)
USB Audio / Interface works great.
They appear to have introduced several regressions in Suite v5.7.1. I'm also back to unplugging it and plugging it back in several times before Suite will recognize the Anagram.

Definitely. I had to completely unplug it from the USB and close Suite to get the Anagram working correctly. Too many bugs and issues were popping up. Then the device started to act weird, it froze after a restart, some blocks were emitting the wrong effects, etc... Definitely a regression... Part of the growing pains for early adopters.

I admire the early adopters for plowing through the debugging of a brand new product. I'll see y'all in about a year. Keep up the good work!
I’d say it’s good enough now to do most jobs, if it only continues to get better I can’t fully imagine what it’ll be capable of

I'm sure it's all good. Even with my favorite gear, I usually don't purchase at initial release. The cake still needs to bake a little bit IMHO.

Same. And since my gear doesn't need any immediate replacing, I'm not in a hurry. That doesn't make it less interesting but, as you say, I'll let it bake a while longer and see how the taste improves.

Are you still taking applicants?? I applied this afternoon, this last update has convinced me to keep this unit and I hope to help out going forward!
Hi everyone!

Sorry for not sending the approvals yesterday. We had a lot of hands tied to the release of the USB audio feature

The NDA process will be completed on Monday (Finland has a public holiday tomorrow), so please bear with us a little longer.
Yes! We still accept applicants and thank you so much! So far over 30 people have filled the form and all will be invited!

Finally managed to get USB Audio working universally on my PC. I know it sounds stupid and intuitive, I had to install the Darkglass USB Drivers from their website. The reason I hadn't was before the latest firmware update, those drivers were actually preventing Suite from ever recognizing my Anagram. So I had to uninstall it, thinking it's not need for this device. Anyway, that solves it for now lol

But like others, I'm still having issues with the dashboard/hub in Suite. It's not fetching and displaying my presets.

Also, to @Rockyy12 , I know this is not an official bug submission forum, but I'll mention that I kept coming across a nasty issue where randomly, the Pitch Shifter was corrupted into distorting the sound into a chorus-like, almost a superimposed dual channel audio effect, while its settings were also not even reflected nor with the ability to edit... no matter what I did, it wasn't going away, unless I rebooted the device. So just an FYI.

My Anagram arrived! Applied to the beta program and I’m excited. I seem unable to create a DG account on the website. My account exists but no confirmation e-mail arrived. Try to resend: “whoops, something went wrong.”

Installed Suite 5.7.1 on Mac. It can see Anagram, OS 0.1. Check firmware update gives “fetching data” then a pause and then “Request failed with status code 504” which means gateway timeout. Tried a few times with no success.

Maybe the website is temporarily hosed and they’re working on it. I see that Suite and Anagram offer a manual update method. Anybody know where to find the latest update tarball?

Edit: firmware updated successfully. Will contact DG if the account issue isn’t resolved in a day or two.

HUGE PROPS to Darkglass for letting you update anagram and access all its features without an account. That’s really friendly behavior ♡

I received the 'something went wrong' message when creating a DG account, too. When I tried again, it said that the account (my email address) was already taken. And I never received the confirmation email. That said, I can log in and am logged in from the Darkglass Suite.

When I run the Darkglass Suite, the "preset dashboard" only displays four factory presets (two on bank 2, one on bank 3, and one on bank 4), yet my device shows five full banks (well, the last bank only has two presets), so 14 presets. Shouldn't all of the presets on the device appear in the Suite? The Anagram is connected to the Suite (I can see the Anagram's version number on the Settings page).
