I am into a really mild driven “slightly hairy” sound like the Jive or the Microtubes.
Anyone had them put up against each other?
In a band situation where everybody’s rocking out - can you actually hear If the pedal is on/off?

The VMT is one of my favorite dirt pedals.As for Jupiter FX,I bought 2 of their Kaleidescope reverb pedals and both crapped out within 4 months..I contacted Jupiter FX multiple times to no avail.Stay away from this company is my best advice.

I prefer the Jive out of those 2. The different diode options give some nice variety. And the Jive is a great price too.

i like the Jive but i prefer the VMT out of those two.

I have not tried the Jive, but the VMT made the cut for me out of several on my own quest for what I wanted out for mild “slightly hairy” sound.

Borrowed a VMT, but didn't like it, as I found it to be too dark.
Never tried the Jive.

For my "slightly hairy" tones, I got two
Go-to pedals.

For dead simple,
It's the Spaceman Effects Saturn VI.

For a lot more flexibility,
It's the Broughton SV-Pre

Gets me that "bit of hair" tone perfectly.
Between the the sweepable mids, and low/high switches, it's capable of a lot of tones.
I don't really look at it as an "SVT in a box"
More like a very cool preamp that's also capable of some sweet overdrive.

I've been using VMT since 2013 and haven't really found something that would consider me to replace it. I'm going for that crunchy, medium OD tone with it (not an always on pedal for me), but it excelled at slight hair tones for me too. It has great mids, and slightly rolled off high end but it's always nicely pronounced in the band mix. Most other "slight hair" OD pedals sound farty to me so I'm not too keen on trying them out (like Barbershop, Saturn, etc), even though I'd like to. They just don't get that crunchy tone that VMT has in spades IMO, which admittedly is kind of a Darkglass thing.

i bought a VMT way back when they first came out in 2014 and thought that it was just too dark sounding and i didn't care for it much, so i sold it about 3 weeks later.

after reading posts about so many loving it here on talkbass, about a year later i decided to try and give it another chance. again, I was disappointed and pretty much immediately sold that one too (i thought what was i thinkin'?)

fast forward to 6 months ago, i bought another one and i LOVE it (go figure!)

BTW, i'm using the same amp as always (a Fender Supertwin head with a 215 cab) and mostly the same basses!
