I have a dpleII and although I've done no studio work, the bass seems dead quiet and hum-free to me. If this was a lakland factory job, I'd contact them for advice and possibly repair/modification. These basses are too sweet to have any reservations about IMHO!

I played my solodbody with DS last night and there was no more microphonics than my Lollar JB pickups,

I mean when do you tap your pickups anyway, play the bass if that creates a noise then there might be a problem, buy you shouldnt be colliding withthe pickup when you play, if you dont play and just tap on the pickups with the amp up to 11, then any pickup is going to make some noise

You might try using the conductive shielding paint that StewMac sells. I used two coats on the pickup and control cavities and get no noise at all from my Dark Star.

notice how every one of us with dark stars is jumping up and down trying to convince our bass brothers and sisters that this is something special...when is the last time that happened?

I think a hollow body fretless with DS's would be the end all, this talk of preamps this bla bla the DS dont need a preamp... they need fingers and and amp period... if you dont sound great then

A) do not play in public

B) consider switching instruments

Yes, and since I've migrated to five string.... ahhh the pain...

My single coil pbass exhibited a ton of hum, but it wasnt sheilded at all. That copper foil works wonders Tim, and you dont need to break out any soldering gun at all. Got mine at stew-mac. $15 AND 1/2 HOUR.

thanks for all the tips guys--don't get me wrong--i love this bass. i use it all the time--it's just like that with way single coil, the noise isn't an issue most of the time, and then in some studios or gigs--noise, damn!! my jazz basses are the same way when i solo the neck pu, which i do a lot....

the only thing that seemed unusual is that, say, turning the volume or tone knob is audible thru the amp or DI--which is not the case on any j or p bass i've ever had. this is a one off custom lakland--all stock--and it's killer. i don't know anyone else with a darkstar bass so i haven't been able to compare the noise to anything else.
