Daryl Johnson

This is an old thread, but here is the most current info I have on Daryl Johnson.

First saw him play back in '03 or so w/ Lanois & Brian Blade at Henry Fonda in LA. Also heard him play with Daniel 3 or 4 more times over the next few years.

His playing live is every bit as good as his studio work- the guy has some amazing, melodic chops. He also sings amazingly well, and not just on harmonies. Was lucky enough to hear him sing some gospel at a few of the shows and it was very moving each time.

But- I noticed that his playing live with Lanois was intermittent- you were as likely to see someone else playing bass in his place. First it was Marcus Blake and then Jim Wilson when Mother Superior was DL's backing band (during DL's residency at Spaceland, I think). Then it was Chris Thomas from Brian Blade's Fellowship, and then back to Jim Wilson for most Black Dub shows. BUT- Daryl did show up for the California leg of the Black Dub tour. I was lucky to meet him after the SD show (Trixie had some voice problems, so it turned into a pretty sweet old school Daniel Lanois/Brian Blade/Daryl Johnson/Jim Wilson show featuring lots of old Lanois tunes).

It finally came out in some interviews that Daryl couldn't leave CA due to some legal problems. From what I've been told, they are drug related legal problems that have put him in and out of treatment and jail for the past ten+ years. That explains why he's not always around and why he can't tour.

Unfortunately, after his few CA gigs with Black Dub and a short stint on Facebook, it looks like Daryl has disappeared again. I hope he's getting the help he needs.

Hey, y’all! It’s been a while since anyone posted on this thread…

My name is Paris. I’m D’s better half. I have an update on his whereabouts. As a matter of fact, he’s sitting with me now. He thanks y’all for the well-wishes and compliments.

Daryl has been back home in New Orleans for the last 7 years. He’s been clean and out of trouble for nearly 15 years. Since being in NOLA, he started a band, The Fuel ft. Omari Neville and Cyril Neville. They’re releasing an album soon. He’s also producing my record, which will be released soon.

A message from Daryl:

Thank you guys, you’re so kind. I will be resurfacing very soon. Insha Allah~

Shoutout to Aaron. Shoutout to Trixie and your better half, my boy. Shoutout to Ian, “Munch” Daryl Jones, Charlie Drayton, Keith and Mick, and Rob Fraboni, and Patti. Shoutout to D and Emmylou, and Dan and Mark, and Peter, and Bob, and Nathan and James East. Shoutout to Robert P., and Rocco, and Trina, and to Danna from the Paramore. To all my other friends, I’ll see you all again soon (I.e. ON STAGE). I love you all. Peace and blessings.

Hey that's some great news. If you are his better half you must be wonderful! :bassist:I still rock out to Daryl's playing with Daniel Lanois all the time.
