Dave Ellefson Sucks

Had to give a listen since I came here to learn whats happening in todays music world. I think I'll head back if that bass line and the way its offered is considered quality. No touch, no tone and NO dynamics at all, extremely boring. I'm trying to be more open minded about metal music but honestly I don't hear or feel any soul or good emotions in it. The bass lines are often "peddle" notes and lets face it any terrible guitar player can play that on bass. I'll keep trying I'm gonna go after some other material and see what happens.

All of these Megadeth tracks are at least 20 years old... Not really modern. For modern musicianship in current metal, I usually direct folks to Mastodon. One of the few proggy metal bands I enjoy listening to. YouTube - ‪Mastodon - Crystal Skull - Studio version‬‏

Both. And the fact they took him back speaks volumes about his role in the band IMHO.

These lines are 20 year old. Not exactly what I'd consider today's music.
Yet they are perfect for the style, which you may or not enjoy.
The ostinato and constant level of output is a quality for metal.
You are delusional if you think these are easy to play.

Some awesome metal bands with good bass are Mudvayne, Symphony X, Mastadon, and possibly Lamb of God.

Dave is a good bassist because he does what is best for the song. Great tone, great timing, and he doesnt try to show off, although many think he is a show off just for the simple fact that he is talented.

Listen to anything off of their albums Alaska, Colors, and The Great misdirect for some phenominal 'modern' metal playing. the example posted has him playing melody rather than a traditional bass part. but still.

I dont know if you can class tool as metal but if you want intresting and dynamic bass lines that arent atall boring there our best bet, just listen to something like the pot, sober or scism. Also a plus one on the elfson love allways thought cliff was overated i hate having to explain to peopoe who dont play any form of music that just because someone is dead they are not the best bassist of alltime, the same goes for paul gray. I am a big megadeth fan and not a big metallica fan so maby a bitof fan boy bias .

Dave Ellefson is a beast on bass. Who in the world would say that he's not? The man does what he needs to do (very well, might I add) in the band he's in and there's no argument outside of that.

I don't know why but I have the feeling Dave Mustaigne make sure everything is like he want it to be not that much what the bass player want to do.

Because, to me, those song are really empty no matter the instrument but I must say I was very surprise of the little tapping solo.

In metal I prefer extrem technical death metal. There i some monster bass player in that kind of music that few player here could match technic wise.

It's really hard to compare Cliff to anyone because he only died when he was 24, in a band that really didn't let him do all that much creatively.

I really don't think Cliff was that sloppy. He was very young, and in retrospect, not that experienced at bass. All of his material was recorded when he was 21-23. Just listen to his playing in K'EA then something in MOP. He had already progressed much in just 2 years of playing in Metallica. If he would have lived up to present day, I'm quite sure that he would be one monster player.

The biggest thing that draws me to Cliff was his passion. Just watch the live shows. He had so much FUN while playing. He wasn't frustrated or ridiculously focused. He was having fun. Whenever I hear Ellefson's playing or watch his performance, it just feels a little bit flat. Spot on, precision wise, but just musically flat. Now, don't get me wrong though, I think he's fantastically skilled and his playing is appropriate for the music.

Tone wise, I find Ellefson to be really thin. His tone is punchy, but it sounds hollow like a rattle. Cliff may have been a bit muddy, but I always loved the growl and girth of his tone. It's very full and has a monstrous feel that fits Metallica.

They are both above average bass players and superb bass players for their genres. I like both for very different reasons.

learned to play some jazz a little as well. It's just not something that fits into Megadeth all that often.

Most of Megadeth's guitarists have been Jazz guitarists.

To be fair it's all about how it fits in the song, you don't have to use all your skills where they don't fit.
