Now I don't actually think Ellefson sucks but i was listening to the isolated bass to Metallica's Battery (you can listen to it here YouTube - ‪Metallica - Battery - Bass Only - By Cliff Burton‬‏ ) And in the comments someone posted this:

" Let's see Ellefson play FFWF or Call of Ktulu. Oh right... he's too busy stuck in the pocket to ever try anything melodic. Herp Derp. Ellefson is nothing special at all." :p

And i found it so funny that i had to share it with you guys xD I've never heard a bassist be criticized for being in the pocket before. I'm not to really play in the pocket much either (Cliff is one of my biggest influences) but i do understand why Dave plays the way he does and i respect it. He even has some pretty awesome fills and solos. But ya i just found that hilarious so i had to share it with you :p:hiding:

Everytime someone compares Megadeth to Metallica in the negative, Dave Mustaine dies a little inside. Lets not kill Dave. They are both great bands, with great hilights (and lo-lights) throughout their discography. Besides, Cliff aside, Metallica aren't well known for positive bass player management (or feedback).

How long has Ellefson been in Megadeth?

I don't think it sounds all that bad at all. When you hear a soloed bass track, it usually sounds nothing to what you here in the context of the song, especially in fast heavy music like this.

If you were to hear the bass track with at least the drums, I think most of you guys would not be as judgmental of it.

If you have done some studio recording or plan to do some, listen to your solo bass track and see what you think of your playing. You may find your playing might not sound as good soloed as you think it would.

i think Dave is an amazing player, and not just because he is one of my influences, but because he plays whats right for the song, and he does it very well!
I love all his basslines and he seems like the most genuinely nice guy you could ever want to meet, so why the hate?

Just because he doesn't play any overrated solos... :hiding: ;)

I always thought Cliff was quite sloppy for someone who gets so much praise from countless bassists. I definitely think Jason was more precise, and now Metallica has a middle ground between Cliff and Jason with Robert. Ellefson plays very cleanly, and has a tone to die for with those Jackson Concert Basses through the Hartke 8x10s. Dave's an incredibly nice guy to boot, so I give him points there as well. Needless to say, I'll be seeing Dave and Robert this fall when the Big Four hit up Yankee Stadium.

Dave Ellefson has just started a new column in Guitar World, and shows that he knows what he's talking about. He did spend his time in High School and beyond pursuing theory and learned to play some jazz a little as well. It's just not something that fits into Megadeth all that often.


I always thought he was perfect for the job, myself. He also makes a great artist rep for Peavey, btw...I got one of my amps through him. He returns phone calls, is always polite and makes time to talk to fans at NAMM; a class act.

Had to give a listen since I came here to learn whats happening in todays music world. I think I'll head back if that bass line and the way its offered is considered quality. No touch, no tone and NO dynamics at all, extremely boring. I'm trying to be more open minded about metal music but honestly I don't hear or feel any soul or good emotions in it. The bass lines are often "peddle" notes and lets face it any terrible guitar player can play that on bass. I'll keep trying I'm gonna go after some other material and see what happens.
Listening to 9 inch nails....I know their not metal but I need a rest from metal I'm beginning to rust out abit. Doc
