I checked all the suggestions out and I can see that theres plenty of knowledge in the instrument. The one tune where the bass player has a short feature is ok but thats not the sound projected in their songs. It's possible that the distorted guitar sound seems to get in my way from clearly hearing what others are playing. Along with the drummers riding on the edge of a heavy cymbal to emulate "fill" is a real distraction, why eliminate notes that can be offered on the ride cymbal. I can understand that sound as a fill but not a constant wash that wipes away what others are doin. Its like the cymbal wash and distorted guitar are trying to set a background that doesn't conclude as sound, rather just noise. Now I know the word "noise" is a bad word throughout all the generations but I think you can atleast understand it with my discription of what I'm hearing. I wish the guitarists with all the crap on the floor would hit the button that makes the guitar sound like a Guitar!!!
Theres seems to be a change in tone for the bass from years ago in this style of music. What I'm hearng now is a more mid-range tone and instead of a low B their seems to be the use of a high C on a 5 string. Also the use of "runs" to the point of sounding like an exercise instead of a passage is widely used.
I'm getting a better understanding on "how" the music is played, I'm not sure "why" its played but that might be better off left alone. I can see and hear the seriousness in the tunes and some obvious concern in the "feelings" offered but essentials like a groove and/or dancability is not felt by me at all. Again the generational thing comes into play. When I brought home a James Brown groove kicking on the "one" my old man couldn't find it either hahahaha!!! Its all good. Doc
