DAVID HOOD WITH TRAFFIC - KNOW YOUR BASS PLAYER

Come on now Rick Grech was a first call British bass player, did a nice solo on the Blind Faith album, he wasn't a flashy player, more a meat and potatoes kind of player but not many bass players come out on top when compared to Jack Bruce. Hood's good too and he's not real flashy either. I was actually not that impressed by the stuff he did in Traffic. I thought Winwood did a very good job on bass for being a keyboard player. and I like the stuff he did on the early Traffic stuff, one of my favorite bands from back then.

Winwood plays many instruments well.

I'd forgotten about the bass solo on "Do What You Like." I just revisited it. Sorry, but I'm not at all impressed. Grech sounds uninspired and technically limited, and he seems to forget quickly that the time signature is 5/4. I know the bar was lower for rock bass players in those days, but I still think there were better bassists around. It would have been cool to hear how Carl Radle would have played in that band, for example.

Well it's a subdued song, and used a Precision bass with flat wounds and probably the mute but he doesn't lose the beat and it's a pretty musical solo. To tell you the truth I wasn't all that impressed when I first heard it 48 years ago either but I've grown to appreciate less flashy players since then.
