This. I’m not sure that I’ll ever understand why there are so many Fender copy basses flooding the market.
Yup, another P-bass.
I wonder, though, how many variations on a theme we can really have. Maybe there are only so many different ways you could shape a bass body and neck, so many different types of pickups that would truly sound different from each other in the mix etc to make a truly new design that would appeal to enough folks to make it profitable to make?

In reference to the above criticisms:
Some of us aren’t remotely interested in oddball geometry as a means to stand out. The p bass (as well as j bass) are eminently relevant and wonderfully customizable platforms that contain a lot of room for innovation without the adverse consequence of unduly raised eyebrows (ie, the ole Singlecut 6 string Fodera at a blues gig type gimmick) To each their own I suppose. IMO, De Gier appears to making a rather badass upgraded modernization of a classic.

It's not really all that hard to understand...
Fender was the first mass produced bass...and it's been around since 1951 and is present on literally hundreds of thousands of recordings....and as a result has been burned into our collective unconscious (familiar, recognizable shape)...Fender's impact is enormous and is still the most sold brand on the market (followed by Ibanez) (Hence the reason it is so copied)
That said there are/were a few design problems/issues that a lot of other builders/manufacturers have addressed over the years...(hence the boutique Fender-esque clones)---Big Lakland Fan here!!!
Not to mention you can literally walk on to any stage any where in the world and perform any music regardless of genre and Fender is right at home...(unlike say a B.C. Rich at a country gig)
the question shouldn't be why are there so copies....it should be why are there not more copies...
There's a huge void between FSOs and the totally weird. Ibanez makes the case of it being so.

maybe that used to be the case but in the past 15 years or so whenever one motor company has a hit on it's hands the others release something in the same class with the same overall features at roughly the same price point...

So we should just resign ourselves to playing Fenders? If that's your stance then there should not be FSOs, because they're ripoffs, right? "Leo did it right the first time, so no need to innovate"? All non-Fender manufacturers should be eliminated?

That is not what i'm saying at all...
But this is the reason why Fender is so copied and emulated...the shape of the P and the J are highly recognized and are considered the Gold standard by many the world over...so people are more willing to take a chance on a different brand they may have never heard of simply because of the familiar aesthetic
if you noticed in one of the posts above I'm a huge Lakland Fan...(I currently own 10 basses and only 3 are branded Fender...however 5 of the other 10 have a Fender-Esque shape being Lakland and G&L) with the final 2 being Rickenbackers...
