Dead Spot

I need some help, my Epiphone Embassy has a dead spot on the second fret of the first string(F sharp). What do I do?

Sell. No, seriously - I don't think there's anything you can do. I once bought a brand new MM Stingray and went the the trouble of replacing the pickup - still had the dead spot around the 5th fret on the G string, which I think is a common spot. So, I sold it. I now have several MM Sterlings with no dead spots.

There must be something I can do, I mean I only bought it yesterday, and the dead spot only showed today. If I really have to sell, what do you think I could get for it?

I thought, perhaps incorrectly that there was a product called Fat Finger that clipped on the headstock and altered the resonance of the neck in a such a way to get rid of dead spots? Anyone?

ive never heard of anything like that, but who knows, it might work...

id sell it, or, considering you bought it yesterday, you might be able to return it and get your money back, although that would depend on where you got it

I got it in a flea market in Lexington, MO. So I can't return it, so I guess selling is still the definitive option, anybody got any estimates? The serial number on the back of the neck is... SJ05090387 and it's in perfect condition.

Try different strings--heavier or lighter. Heavier strings worked for me.

I'll talk to my instructor tomorrow and see what he has to say, I'll tell him about the strings. Never thought of that!

 

[Turnaround]

Don't be in a hurry to sell it. It could be as small an issue as an unseated fret. I recommend that you get an evaluation of the problem from a qualified tech before deciding what to do.

That's why I was going to wait until tomorrow and see what my teacher thought about it.

You might tweak the neck a little and tweak intonation at the bridge. Strings is a good idea, too.

Turns out it just needs new strings, the string in question had a lump at that fret, so it was the strings that did it.
