Dean Bass Hate?

I wish they'd make a better looking 12ver than the Rhapsody.

Ah, I love the look of the Rhapsody 12 (and 8).

I suppose all of this is subjective though, eh?

I just picked up a Dean Hammer 10 string (dual course, 5). Unfreakin' believable bass for the money. Mahoghany body with natural oil finish, grover tuners, etc. I might switch out the preamp at some point, as the stock pre is 2-band and unremarkable). Otherwise, I'm very happy with this bass.

Anyway, this is my only experience with a Dean bass, but I am certainly biased now!

I love my Deans. This is my favorite though.

My bubinga top Rhapsody. It plays SO nice, and sounds good too.

Chump,

That's a great looking bass you have there. Like I was mentioning in my earlier post here, I have always wanted to try out one of those. How long have you had it? How would you describe its tone? Do you find it handles all playing styles (fingerstyle, pick, slap) well?

They're quite hard to come by these days. In fact, they were always hard to come by. The Rhap 8 and 12 seemed to get all the glory when that product line was first introduced.

I've never once seen any "hate" for Deans. However the majority of them are built for the entry-level young consumer market mostly, so you won't see a lot of "love" for them from older players and players who have moved up from entry-level gear.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying they are bad at all, just explaining why you don't see more Dean praise around.
This may sound strange, but I have been playing bass for well over 20 years now, and have went from a Muiscman stingray to a fender to my current bass, which is a Dean Edge 5 stringer. No complaints here!

I found it on ebay in 2003, for $300 new old stock. I think it was called a "Dean Rhapsody BB4". I think it sounds good. If you listen to the songs on my web page, almost every song was recorded with that bass. It's got a mahagony back with a bubinga top. Passive EMGs, and DR Red Devils (in badly need of change right now). "Djembe Jam" on my page is just a bass track runing direct, and a Djembe. So you can kind of get an idea of the tone. The best part about this bass is it's playabillity though, it's got the nicest low action, it plays so smooth.

1) Bass hate is wrong, in any form. You can love some more than others, but why hate? Just say it ain't your cup of tea.

2) After reading through this thread I'm not sure if Dean only makes basses with the right sound for metal with spikes all over them or not - I mean, I think I know who Jeff Berlin is and I don't think his sig bass would have any metal type body shape, and I'd even think that he might endorse a bass that would sound fine in a jazz context. I'm so confused.
