i guess i can now join into this now i have a metalman ml ver 1 just bought it from guitar center the list price was 339 or something i got it for 179. i have only two small isuess with the bass the strap locks that i bought wont work for the front strap holder screww head is not long enough and not thich enough to fit. and cant find a case for it might have to build one any one now a site that shows you how to build one.

Here's my Dean Rhapsody 8-string. It's a great bass. Excellently built and sounds quite good, but I think eventually I'll probably have to get rid of it in favour of a short-scale 8-stringer.

I'm a Fender guy too.... I tried a Dean and loved it and was pleasantly surpised by the price!!! I'm jonesing for an Edge 8 string.

I first became aware of Dean in the early 80s when Rik Emmett on Triumph was using a Dean flying V...have Dean been in production consistently or did they disappear for a while ?

Sorry, I never saw this message until tonight when someone resurrected the thread. Dean Zelinsky sold Dean Guitars in like 1986 because he wanted to make custom furniture, but was lured back in the late 90's by the guy he sold it to. He doesn't own Dean anymore, but he's still the brains behind it.

Actually, the company changed hands a few times. The 80s was is referred to "The Tropical Era", because a company called Tropical owned them. Eliot, the current owner, bought the company in the late 90s?, and then Dean Z came back.

Hey,

Since a couple of years I'm the proud owner of a DEAN Edge 5 bass. I'm really satisfied about it, but the thing that bothers me is that I can't find the right strings for it. The stock strings were perfect (for me), but I've had a few other types of strings, but none were as good as the original.

My question now is : does anybody know what type of strings are used as the Dean stock strings ???

If not, what type of strings do you suggest for a 5 string bass, with the option of downtuning them to Bb Eb Ab Db Gb.
I play (death/trash) metal.

I forget what model but all I know it used to be bright red and I stripped all the lacquer and paint along with the veneer on the headstock. I then stained it honey satin and replaced the bridge with a BAII and put roundwounds extra light guage on it. In the future I am replacing the Pups. Anyone have any suggestions?

I own a Dean Edge 4 and an Edge 5. They are practically identical other than the string number, and both found by coincidence. They each have two passive pickups, but not EMG's. It's some italian sounding name (not bert.) that slips my mind at the moment. These were my first two basses, and even after a few years, a LOT of learning, and playing a bunch of other basses, I still -love- the tone on these things. I had to replace the pots, and the tuning pegs are kind of loose, but I haven't found a similar sound for anywhere -close- to the same value (mine cost $175 and $250, approx.).

They are both "burnt orange" or whatever Dean calls it, but I wish the tops were the color of the backs: a deep and beautiful stained red.

I'm happy with them.

By the way, if anyone knows the models well enough to date them (mine are Korean, and thus don't have the easy-to-read serial numbers), I'd really apprieciate it.
