Dean Club!!!

Collectors - check this one out. Not the super nice Euro spec model, but still, it's got JB's autograph on it . . . Used Dean Jeff Berlin Electric Bass Guitar - Red | Reverb
Cool!
Thanks for posting.
Nice price, but I question the provenance of the signature. Here is one signed by Jeff that has been verified by Jeff and one of his students.

I have Jeff's autograph from my time at Player's School of Music - the one on the guitar might be fake, in silver sharpie, but it does look like his signature and someone would really have to do some research to find his autograph, practice doing it, then find a real dull silver sharpie to write it on a lower end JB model. Seems more likely that someone brought the bass to Jeff and he signed it . . .

Doesn't really look like it matches the one on the back of the Czech Prototype. Too many differences?
But hey, if you and my source (Todd Sabbides) both went to Player's school and you say it matches yours, then it must be because the back of the headstock from my source was too scrunched up for writing space to sign per usual perhaps?

Yeah, that head stock doesn't enough room for Jeff to sign correctly. That autograph there is all funky looking.

Should look more like this: JEFF BERLIN Aneurythms CD MAJ Records ANE-80180 **SIGNED** | eBay

Hi, all

I recently snagged a Dean bass off Craigslist for $100 as a complete beginner. I wasn't too concerned about the condition as I just wanted something to learn the fundamentals on and possibly tinker with mods. The seller said this particular model was made in Dean's US shop due to the "A" at the start of the serial number, but I'm not too convinced.

Could anyone please let me know if this is a Dean Edge model made in the US in 2009? Any other nuggets you notice about this particular model? @B-Mac...thanks for any help.

Either the seller was just ignorant of Dean basses or intentionally lied to you.
$100 is still a good price though.
Made in China
‘Zone’ model
Entry level bass
zone specs 2013 cat.jpg

For Guitar Center it came as yours is, in exclusive trans black matte. Zone XM GC
There is also the Zone II which was made only for Guitar Center. Same bass, but with two pups and additional controls.
There is also the Custom Zone with special paint and special necks.

All 'Zone' models are MIC.
09 after the ‘A’ does denote 2009 model year. However, not all Dean guitars and basses follow that standard. Pre-2008 Asian made Dean basses are harder to date and a reference to catalogs is needed.

Here are 'Zone' search results within this club thread:=424546']Search Results for Query: zone | TalkBass.com

For future reference, Dean guitars and basses made in the USA will be stamped like this with 7 digits and won't be selling for $100:

I've also seen peeps thinking Deans with a 'US' at the beginning of the serial number assuming they're made in the USA. 'US' at the beginning of a serial number is for the 'Un Sung music factory' in South Korea which closed sometime in 2015 and made guitars and basses for other manufacturers besides Dean.

Thanks a lot! I had a feeling it was too good to be true since there wasn't a "MADE IN USA" stamp. Live and learn.
As long as it functions and plays and the action is good that’s all the matters. Also a decent platform for trying your hand at making mods.

Please peruse the search list I posted for you.

Have fun on your bass learning journey!;)

And welcome to Talk Bass as I see in your profile that you just joined recently. :hyper:

Tale of two similar basses.

A while ago I had purchased a few Edge 09M basses for a mod project I was going to do. Recently I got all of them out next to each other and noticed one had 24 frets and abalone dot inlays

The others had 22 frets with one having pearl dot inlays and the other having abalone dot inlays.

Of my 24 or so catalogs none indicate a 24 fret spec Edge 09M Bass although other upper tier Edge basses do have 24 frets.

The guys at Dean have no clue (at least as of yet).

So, anyone here have a 24 fret Edge 09M or any Edge 09 that has 24 frets rather than the specified 22 frets?

24 frets - Bridge appears to be a greater distance from bottom of bass body.

22 frets - Bridge appears to be a shorter distance from the bottom of bass body.

Since my last post of this I have come across 4 more of these for a total of 5 including mine.
Here is a more recent one on 'Regurge'

Guys at Dean still have no clue

i just picked up a Dean Korean made "V" Bass.
It has active electronics with 2 EMG-HZ Humbucker style pickups.
It has a floating bridge and is very light.

I have searched the WWW and can't find out any info or pic anywhere.
My question is has anybody seen, heard or know anything about this particular Dean Bass.

Nice!:bassist:

Looks like it is in great shape.

Give me a few minutes.
Also, your 2nd attachment is not viewable.

Your bass is the Dean V Tour Bass not to be confused with the Dean V Metalman Bass which is a lower tier bass than yours is. I believe yours has the set neck rather than bolt-on.

Also, please post the back of the neck showing the joint and the back of the headstock with the serial number. If you're uncomfortable showing the serial number then please show the first four characters of the Serial Number.

Thanks.

Here is a 2009 catalog page. Don't go by the pictures. Go by the descriptions. Read the description for the Dean Z Tour Bass at bottom 2nd from left. You'll see they mention your Dean V Tour Bass.
Pages from DeanNAMM09_NewProducts -12.jpg

@barclaybass has a Dean Z Tour Bass which shares a lot of the features that your bass has.

It is
That’s what your bass is
However the model year of your bass is a tad perplexing.
02 would be 2002 and they weren’t made then based on my catalog collection. (I’ll have to double check as I’m going by memory)
Could you post an actual picture of the back of the headstock please.

The ‘E’, at that time designated the ‘World Music’ factory in South Korea which has made many Squier, Epiphone, Schecter and other Dean basses and guitars.

Later guitars and basses made by ‘World Music’ for Dean changed S/N designation to W and also to WK starting in 2015.

The set neck, EMG, Active Preamp, different bridge all point to the ‘V Tour’ model. The V Metalman didn’t have these features.

You have a really nice V Tour. And since Dean got sued by Gibson you won’t be seeing any new Dean’s like that one.

Dean made a hard case and a hard soft case (not gig bag) for these too.
