Dean Club!!!

Picked this up from Sam Ash two weeks ago. Was watching for a while and price kept coming down. I stopped watching and then started watching it again and price came down again and then they sent me an offer on an even lower price...so I own it now. A 2008 Dean Edge 1Q.

Just posting a little story I thought I'd share...
I posted the above back in November 2023. I purchased a Dean Edge 1Q from Sam Ash in King of Prussia. Got a great price on it. Pretty much display NOS, as in never sold.
They shipped it Fed Ex if I recall correctly. Box showed no damage. But they did not double box it nor place the bass in a cheap gig bag or similar. Bubble wrap was used sparingly.

Somehow, someway there was a dent/gouge on the inside of the lower horn closer to the treble side of the neck.

I was a bit bummed, but considering what I got it for I didn't bother returning it. Then I remembered that @D.A.R.K. had posted some information about Prana Guitars. They are near me, but I never heard of them. They only are on FB and I don't play the Social Media game, at least not FB or Twitter or Instagram.
I reached out to them using other means and got a great response.
So below, here is the story in pix and YT vid.
Enjoy

Great looking repair there. As I posted a few years ago, I just couldn't fathom a repaired neck even though the drunken retired railroad man who fell on it was willing to pay for repair. I was lucky enough to find a NOS fiver with just 9 numbers up the serial number progression. It was ok, but didn't have the sound of my slightly modded busted one. So I switched necks to my favorite body. Still loving that red five string. Gets equal playing time to the razor!

Makes me sick to think about it...

So I made a couple changes to my Paramount. Had a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickup installed, plus a full shielding job. Also had it set up with a custom string set from Stringjoy, 145-85-65-45 tuned AADG - if anyone here is familiar with the band Thrice, their bassist uses this tuning on a few songs, the octave strings sound HUGE. Will have to upload a sound clip when I have time but I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Interesting tuning. I'd have no idea what to do with it. Hope to hear your sound clip to get an idea.

I switched out my pups for Dean USA Vintage and really like them.

It's basically like playing a three string bass tuned ADG, but with a lower octave string. Playing power chords on the A/D strings and throwing in the lower octave string sounds really big.

This live recording is a good example, straight out of the gate he's playing chords in that tuning.

Hey @B-Mac , what can you tell me about this one? Dean Edge 5 string in a purple finish. Looks to be in really good condition. 2002 vintage?

Need to see the rest of it. Some S/N between 2002 and 2007 can be a bit whacky. I really need to see the rest of the bass and compare it to my catalog data to nail it down.

For starters, I can tell you it was made at the World Music Factory in Korea.
The neck is five piece Maple and Walnut.
Could be an Edge 4 or an Edge 4Q.

Based on the link from @OldBlue61 thats definitely a 2002 model as it agrees with catalog information. It’s a Dean Edge 4 with Dean DMT pups, Basswood body, transparent purple gloss finish and is active. The vertical script logo verifies its a pre-2007 model as they had switched to a horizontal script logo.

Just for comparison:
The Edge 4Q had a quilt maple top, Basswood body, transparent gloss finish and EMG HZ pups.

The Edge 4QB had the same as the Edge 4Q but Bartolini pups instead.

For $250 it’s a steal! The neck is a satin finish. String spacing is tight <17mm.

I can give you actual measurements later if you need them as I have a 5 string fretless version.

I've been wanting to add an inexpensive 5-string to my (minimal) collection to try one out, and this one looked like a good canidate, so thanks for the information, as always! Still trying to figure out my next move, but that definitely helps!
@gormsby liked the Edge 4 so much that he bought 3 of them.

Definitely a 2002
Trans Purple (TPP) was not a color choice in the 2003 catalog.

Mine is a fretless 2011 Edge 5 (based on Edge 4 w/5 strings) model and also made at the World Music Factory in South Korea.

string spacing at bridge pup 14.0 mm
string width at bridge pup 58.3 mm

Definitely tight. Thin narrow Satin neck makes for a fast neck IMO.

I'd assume that even though yours is 9 years older than mine that the specs did not change since they're still made in the same factory.

Confession: I'm down to 2 Dean Edges now.

In the last year, I have really gotten into building basses and guitars from scratch. Since my little Dean binge, I've finished:
  • A 6-string short-scale bass, a sort of tribute to the Fender VI but better (ok, "different," for my needs)
  • A passive P/J, sort of a Precision tribute
  • A rather overdone fretless with two Nordstrand Zen Blade pickups and a 3-band active EQ with passive bypass (which I pretty much always play in passive mode.)
  • A passive Jazz-style fretless
  • A semi-hollow 6-string guitar
...and I have underway two Telecaster-ish guitars with different pickup configurations, and another fretless bass, taking what I learned with the Jazz-style one and improving on the one that got the Nordies. No wood or parts bought for that last one, but once I start writing down ideas, it's pretty much a done deal, and there are already notes on paper.

This has left me sorely hurting for, well, a place to put everything, and feeling like I have too many, but don't want to quit building. So something had to give.

I did a bit of rearranging, so the tiger-eye maple top Edge with Barts got the fretless neck, leaving me two standard Edges with fretted necks. I kept my favorite of these and donated the other one to my son's school band program. The band teacher was delighted.

Sweet!

I don't know what it is, but I'm liking Sunburst (Tobacco Burst little to no red/orange transition) more and more on any Bass.
