Dean Markley SR 2000 for 7 string

Ordered a set of Dean Markley SR 2000 for my 7 string Benavente. They came with SIT stainless which I really liked but SIT doesn't make a wound F string that is easy to come by or affordable. These are the same gauge as the Conklin Snakeskins, (Which are SIT stainless) so I'm looking forward to trying them out as I have never used Dean Markley bass strings before. Anyone have some input on the brand I would appreciate it.

One: that bass is gorgeous.

Two: love the SR2000s - they're long-lasting, easy to intonate with the taper cores, and are delightfully full in the mids given that they're steels. However, I find that the default set for seven-stringers isn't very balanced in terms of the tension. They have this weird heavy top/light bottom tension thing going on that I'm not a fan of.

I bought a set of custom-lights from bassstringsonline.com (0.22/0.27/0.40/0.55/0.75/0.95/0.135, high F to low B); while SR2000 singles aren't listed on the site, you can drop Jason an e-mail and he'll set you up with whatever gauges you're looking for. I'm a huge fan of both said gauges and Jason's website - both are easy to use. Equivocation!

Yeah I haven't used those gauge strings before so we'll see how the tension works. I guess if I wanted a balanced set I could order some Circle K. They make a .023 wound which may be a little heavy for a F string. Should be fun either way, going to take the bass to the studio next couple of weeks.

Installed at set and my first impressions with the string were good. I am going to play a gig next week so I'll really be able to hear them. Bedroom test sounded good. If they don't work out I may go back to SIT or try Circle k with the .023 wound.

Speaking as someone who's tried entirely too many brands of strings: I'm not a huge fan of the Prosteels' longevity and would advise against them. While the price-per-unit might be less than the SR2000, I could easily go through two packs in the time that it took one set of the SR's to croak. YMMV, IMO, etc etc.

Interesting, I had a set left over from trying them out on my Fodera AJ6. I prefer the Fodera strings on that instrument and wanted to try them on the Benavente. After D'Addario stopped making slowound strings I switched to SIT and have been using them for over a decade. But SIT doesn't make a standard wound "F" string. I still want to try Circle K strings even though the .023 "F" will be tight.

Well except for a dead B string they still sound great! I am amazed with the longevity of these strings. I have played at least a dozen gigs and have been rehearsing with this bass all month long for a show this week. I'm going to change them out before the show but damn, 4 1/2 months and still clear!
