Double Bass Decent bag for DB

I recently had an accident with my bass during transport, and the result is a nice big crack in the front, to the right of the bridge and endpin. The repair will be expensive, but the bass will probably be better than before, since it was somehow bad set up. I think there was quite a big tension in the front board, and that´s the reason for the wood fatique.

Anyways....this make me think of getting a decent bag for the bass. A bag with really thick padding for good protection.
Any suggestions?

Have in mind that I´ve got a pretty big Grünert with Wienna-style headstock. I think it is an 7/8 bass: 4/4 body with 3/4 scale

Soundwear bags are very popular here in Germany. They are heavy, stiff, expensive,
and ugly, but probably offer the best protection short of a fiberglass trunk. Also, the handles and straps are well thought out, so you can actually carry the thing if you're fit. I'm a Mooradian man myself.

Mooradian bags are really nice and they can be conveniently rolled up and stuffed under the piano or in a corner on the gig. The most important thing to look for is a good fit. I chose the Messina because it fits like a glove and provides great protection. It also can stand in the corner all by itself which is something no Mooradian can do. ;)

I have three Messina bags one for each of my basses, custom made from the measurements of each instrument. That's made to measure construction for less than the price of the Moradian.

I like Moradian bags a lot. I like the Messinas better.

Very well made. Lots of padding. Never had a problem with the handles...and they are located perfectly to make carrying it very easy. It has withstood being in the back of a pickup truck at minus 30 ( the bass was a Kay at the time) when I lived in northern Ontario and has been dragged around to shows and festivals for more than 10 years. Still no need to replace it.
Incredible value for the money.

Pro's and con's of the "Standard" versus "Deluxe" Mooradian bags? Clearly the deluxe bag has more padding and can be custom fitted, how vital is that for the weekend warrior who plays in tame venues and transports his own gear?

I think the standard bag is really thin. Probably padded enough for most players however. The Deluxe is thicker, the Messina is thicker still and the Soudwear even more than that. Moradian standards are really foldable for those looking for places to stash it while on the gig in a resturaunt where space is at a premium and the car isn't nearby. The deluxe is thicker but is still more foldable than the Messina or the Soundwear. Once you break in the Messina bag it folds as good as a Moradian Deluxe. It just takes awhile.

Oh and don't discount the value of fit when you are carrying the bag. Bad fit means it slouches on your shoulder and doesn't manuver as well. Good fit snugs it to you better and you are less likely to have cartage mistakes leading to damage.

When I first started gigging alot on DB, being a broke-ass musician, I needed a decent bag for cheap. I bought a new bag from the classifieds here. It was the bag that comes with Eastman basses I believe, sold under the name "Presto".

I thought it would have just gotten me by till I could afford a better one. I didn't think it would last very long. It's now been 3 years, with very hard use weekly and has not one area of wear, or any zipper issues or tears at all. It is very thickly padded, has good storage areas and a ******** of handles. It has seat-belt strapping criss-crossing all the crucial areas to reinforce them. It has two metal D-rings on each side for bunjee-cording the bass inside the car to keep it steady.

It has survived some pretty rough rockabilly club gigs, getting tossed around, beer spilt on it, stepped on, danced on, etc. It has protected my old plywood bass very well from knocks.

Plus, my cat thinks it's his personal hidey-house now. I have to vacuum it out alot. :D

I think Jerry Fretwell sells these Presto bags, there are a few different models. They are on the better quality end of the cheap bag market IMO.
