I buy a dozen sets (at least) at a time . . . and with the discount that the Carvin Hollywood store gives me I end up paying about $10 a set for the set I use . . . 5011 5-string medium light gauge (040,060,080,100,128) . . . . . .

I remember buying GHS boomers and Dean Markley Nickel steels. I do recall that I liked the sound of both. I was going to buy the GHS boomers but decided on the EB's while in line at GC.

Opinion only obviously - but this is too subjective of an issue to categorically say that (in round wounds especially) that one will sound better to you than another because there are simply too many variables. I HAVE seen $9 brand name strings commonly sold (of many common brands!) via standing retail stores (& certainly the net). And there is a specific reason.....

Many vendors provide a "kick-back" for number of units sold (due to manufacturing change-overs, etc) and will give the vendor money based on number of units; thus the price can drop to even below wholesale level due to that reimbursement. This happens in MANY areas of commerce from musical instruments to computer printers.

Size, scale, pup's, bridge/nut configuration,& wood resonance can all contribute to a particular string sounding like crap on one guitar and great on another. There are some areas of generalization that may have some accuracy & that's how long the string could maintain it's "fresh sounding" vibration tonality; yet that can be affected by dirt & debris from the user and becomes a variable once again.
