decided to build a somewhat unique bass

no they didn't.

it's not that unique, since they already have the jaguar bass body (which is the same as a jazzmaster) in their system (i've seen two others completed here on talkbass), and all it's going to have is a neck pocket route, so it seems a bit ridiculous to me.

i should be able to get a blank slab within a week, and a week after that have it cut on the band saw, shaped and routed. i just need to find a lightweight piece of alder (or possibly swamp ash), so i better get crackin'. ;)

i sent a pickguard back to them that was the wrong color for another bass which they received on the 15th, and they said that they're 'processing' the return now and they'll ship the replacement next week, so i'm not too impressed with their 'process'.

i just ordered a swamp ash blank slab for the second jazzmaster bass from the same guy that got me the featherweight swamp ash for my stingray body build. this way i'll have a swamp ash one and an alder one. it should be arriving by the end of next week so i can get these basses underway in a timely manner.

since i'm now going to build two of them, the #2 (swamp ash bodied) jazzmaster bass is going to look something like this (shoreline gold with a maple pearloid block & bound neck w/matching headstock):

actually, i'm thrilled to be using a Nordstrand MM4.4 in this bass, and really happy that a 4 coil pickup like this even exists, since with the look of it just having a single MM pickup, i'll be able to get four distinct sounds out of it (with the (hum free) split mode being my personal favorite).

as far as trems go, i never found one to be useful in a bass (i had one with a Kahler for a very short time in the early 80's), but i guess that i'm just a traditionalist. ;)

Didn't know that pup had 4 coils...that's pretty neat. As far as the trem goes, I agree on it's usefulness for bass being, well, useless. They sure look cool though:D

yep, here's a pic of its underside:

this is the one that i installed in my lightweight swamp ash stingray. i wired a 4 pin solderless quick connector on it so i'd have access to either set of the two split single coils, or run all four of them in parallel or series. it is humbucking in all four modes since it's basically two split coil pickups in one.

John, I ask this with admiration and interest... Are you going to make any more of these or consider selling the one that you're less a fan of? I was on a "I want an EBMM" kick but I would really really love one of these.

i got the body cut out on the band saw a few minutes ago. now i just have to lay out exactly where all of the control, preamp, neck pocket and battery routes are going to be.
right now it weighs only 4lbs 6.3 oz so it's definitely going to be under 4lbs before paint and probably closer to 3 1/2lbs.
(BTW, the jazz bass neck in the photos isn't for this bass, i'm just using it to get an idea of it's location until it's neck arrives). this one is going to have a one-piece maple, pearl block & bound neck).

i'm using a 25K linear for the volume since it has a better taper for the MM preamp and a 25K audio for the tone pot. i've been experimenting with the cap's value and i'm currently using a 1.5uf cap but am thinking of using a .2uf since it doesn't cut all that much highs with the ray preamp.
