deciding on heads

which is the best out of these for playing drop c heavy music?

1. Acoustic 150
2. Peavy Mark IV
3. Sunn Concert lead (i know its a guitar head but i hear they work as bass heads and sound good)
4. Gallien Krueger 200rb

my freind has these and im deciding which i should buy.

thnaks.

IMO, out of your list, the GK200Rb. mostly because it has the most useable power.

below is my take (opinion) on them:
acoustic 150's sound pretty good but are only clean up to about 60-75 watts.
the Sunn, up to about 100 watts, & kinda harsh
the peavey is loud, but very brittle sounding (sounds like cardboard)
the GK is good for about 150 watts but at least it sounds like a bass amp.

no flames please................

I never minded the Mark IV. Not the greatest amp I ever heard but it was decent. Still, I agree with John that the one on the list I'd take is the 200RB by a pretty big longshot. However, the Acoustic 600 is not horrible. Not especially great but I'd say it hangs tonally with the other stuff. But I'd still take the 200RB because it sounds better to me.

Well you want a lot of watts, so your amp can handle the bottom end really well. That being said, I'd go for a Sunn head setup you can find some of the tube ones cheap on eBay ($200-400). Or grab a Mesa 400+, the thing has so much power it's ridiculous. ( if I recall there's a few in the amp classified forum) As for the distortion pedal, you want something to keep your bottom end strong. I'd say if you get a really good amp, why not get a strong boost pedal( check out the ohno Blowing up/ boost pedals that will push your amp really hard) ; so you get the distortion sound from your amp. A Sunn and a ridiculous boost pedal could get some sweet sounds.

id like to buy one of the ones he has because he'd prbly give me a good deal, i dont want to spend over 250$ for the head.

Drop C heavy music will require a good amount of wattage and a good cabinet to handle the mayhem. The Ampeg 610 is a good choice for cabs (bigger than the 410).

But honestly, the heads you are considering and the budget you are at right now severely limits your chances of getting a good bass tone. You will have to reduce everything below 100hz heavily. So basically, turn the bass knob to the left until the head can get loud enough. The bass tone you can create with those heads to survive through a metal style drummer is going to be mostly midrange and high end. It's going to sound awful on it's own, but it will get you heard in practice. If you want a better tone (more low end and cleaner sounding overall). You need more wattage. 500w or more.

i am also looking into buying a distortion pedal.

anyone know which is the best option for my money?

looking for a heavy tone, i play mainly like crust-punk and hardcore / grind

Crust and grind? Get a Metal Zone pedal. It's cheap, and lo-fi enough to sound authentic. Get that Napalm Death buzzsaw sound!

Still don't know about the head tho. Maybe a BDDI preamp and used power amp is what you need. You can find 500w @ 4 ohms in a power amp for under 300 used. plenty of juice.
