What you are looking for in a bass is one that inspires you to play enough that you'll actually practice - if you want a great sounding bass, practice is how you get there - your capabilities are far more important than the plank of wood you're holding. A great bass is just a tool that helps - it doesn't get in the way. Go and play some basses. When you find one that you don't want to put down, buy it (regardless of whether or not it's the best value or looks the coolest), and go home and practice. It is really that simple.
P.S. If you try 100 basses, and don't find one that makes you want to play, you're not a bassist.

i love the sound of mustang PJs.
but i love my broncos, too. and they're just so cheap, if you buy one on a black friday sale, you'll be able to do any mods and still get a good value. mine are both affinities, not the new sonic models, but they have a lot of empty, routed space under the pickguard.

Since you're a P bass fan, did you try the Squier Mini P bass? - around here it's $10 less than the Bronco.
I was looking at these SBMM shorties earlier today! Which colour sounds better??
Picked one up - found the body too small. The Jackson concert minon felt more balanced in my hands, but had that darn J pickup.

Yet another that I know recall having picked up. Something about it just didn't gel with me.
If you made me choose this second, I'd likely go with the JMJ only because part of me feels like I'd be missing out on something with the CV (even though that is probably unrealistic)
That's pretty much why I want to change out the SBMM SS - I really dislike the sound I get off the G string with the pickup where it is. It's fine playing unplugged. It's a bit of a beast at 9#, and has a bit of fret sprout, but I do like the rest of bass overall. I know what I get might not be TheSoundTM but at least it will be something I'll enjoy more in practice. And I know that this is a very personal thing as I hear the tone that I don't like in a lot of other playing which people enjoy.

I went with the CV and upgraded the pickup. It's a much higher quality instrument than the price suggests.
I have not played a Mustang since junior high when my school had one, so probably not the best person to compare. But if you're looking for something different that sounds big, I think the Reverend is worth a shot. I have a Mercalli 5, and have played (in stores) a handful of other 34" scale Revs, and their build quality and playability to price point ratio is really, really good IMO. Every one I've played is even up and down the fretboard, sustains well, harmonics ring out, etc. - the stuff you'd expect a good instrument to do. I've had my Mercalli 5 for about 7 months now, and it immediately went into Main Gigging Bass status.
The only thing that I think can be a downside is if you play sitting down all the time - they are not as rounded as a Fender or FSO, so if you have it in your lap, the difference is there. But on a strap, no issues.

Slap A DiMarzio split coil humbucker (Model J or Ultra J) in the J hole and you might change your mind about wanting an extra pickup.
Can you expand a bit on why you like it. I've been pondering getting one of these, but keep chasing other shiny objects in the shortscale department
It is fairly light, simple, fit comfortably when sitting, has a 4 saddle bridge and was cheap. It's not the "shortest" of the short scales in my house (my Gretsch G2220 feels a bit shorter due to the bridge being closer to the end of the body). I enjoyed the little I played it, but it is currently my 14 year old's number 1. I'm still contemplating one, but I'm getting remarks about the other bass I just picked up. I too have shiny object issues.
