Deep thought

At the risk of keeping this thread on track, I was glad to see Jimmy write:

...if we're talking just the sound, the VT's got it goin' on. Just today I mic'ed up my B-15 to see how a track I recorded for a client with the VT compares. The VT track sounded so close that I stuck with it. And when I say close, I mean pretty much dead-on.

A often-ignored distinction in TB threads is the difference between:
1) recordings and performances with support (miked or DI) from house subwoofers, and
2) live performances without house support.

Other than my beloved B-15N that is 40+ years old, I'm not actually a huge fan of the "Ampeg sound". I've gone back to 15" drivers for many gigs, however, because they provide a feel and depth that I just don't get from 10s or 12s when there is no help from house subwoofers. (I know, I know. Eight 10s might be a difrferent matter, but I'm not seeking that tone.)
